ABSTRACT

As time passes at a fast rate, college is already waving and drawing near to the senior high
students of Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial - Dumaguete Science High School (RTPM – DSHS).
The researchers wanted to know and understand the preparation of grade 12 students for college.
The study is made to determine the motivational factors that drive students to decide on their future
careers. The participants for this research were chosen by the researchers through purposive
sampling with the use of the zoom app for the interview process. The researchers come up with
four (4) emergent themes that provided answers to our research questions: Emotional State of
Students’ College Preparation; Expectation About College; Factors to Be Considered; Experiences
in Senior High School. Based on the results, the researchers would like to recommend tackling
deeper on students’ course preference to pursue and broadening the range of participants.

Keywords: College preparation, Senior year students transition to college, Decisions of senior high

Chapter 1

Introduction

College is an important stage to be prepared for. Long-term financial gain, job security,

career satisfaction, and success outside of the office are all reasons why college is crucial. A

college degree is essential to your success in today's job environment because most occupations

require further education.

Success in life will always have a different meaning to every person. Obtaining a college

degree or not clearly depends on the person if they would consider that as their success. The

researchers would like to know the incites of senior year students on their preparation for the near

future, to pursue higher education, or to proceed with other things unrelated in pursuing college.

But this study will be focusing more on the state of students’ college preparation.

Discussion about the opinions of RTPM – DSHS 12th – grade students on the significance

of K – 12 implementations for their college preparation will be of great value by the DepEd. This

study will give the government some ideas on how they can give more guidance to senior year

students. The researchers would like to unearth the student’s state behind those faces they try to

put up. Some of the things that students need in this phase of their life are emotional support,

financial education, and knowledge about the real world.

2

Background of the study

Senior high aims to prepare the students before entering College, equipping them with the

competencies, global skills, and knowledge needed to achieve a successful career path in the

future. College readiness is a measure of a student’s academic, social and psychological

preparedness and can play a major role in college success. In 2013, the Department of Education

of the Philippines effectively implemented the K-12 program; where the ten years of basic

education extend to twelve years. The aim of the program is to enhance the learner’s basic skills,

produce more competent citizens, and prepare graduates for lifelong learning and employment. It

also improves the students’ mathematical skills, science, and linguistics to further exhibit

competence in the near future. A grade 12 graduate who is college-ready has the mentality as well

as a mix of skill and knowledge to fully engage in a complete college-level course (Tran, 2015).

Students’ readiness for college may also be affected by financial problems, family influence,

location of the school, or peer pressure. In some cases, students are well-prepared with the help of

the following; high school faculty, parents, and their own self-discipline to achieve success,

though, intentional planning during a student’s senior year of high school help perform well from

the get-go in a college career (Kokemuller, 2016). Also, there are several factors affecting their

choice in enrolling in the course they want. The purpose of this study is to know what are the

things the grade 12 students in RTPM-DSHS prepare for their college.

3

In Alselmo A. Sandoval Memorial National High School, a similar study was conducted

in October 2017 entitled “ASSESSMENT FOR THE PREPAREDNESS OF SENIOR HIGH

SCHOOL STUDENTS UNDER ACADEMIC STRANDS FOR COLLEGE.” The study focuses

on 5 major factors that affect the preparedness of a Senior High Student. These factors are family

income, the field of interest, chosen course for college, and grades or performance. All of the

mentioned factors can be prepared in the pre-college level which is senior high or grade 12 and

grade 11. The first conclusion, according to the results of the study, the different indications or

basis for the students in order to be prepared in college are (a.) Monthly income of the family. (b.)

Fields of interest of the students. (c.) Chosen course for college of the student. (d.) Attitude,

behavior, grades, and performance of the student inside the class. The second conclusion is that

the role of The Senior High School program is the following: first, it provides guidance and

direction to the student’s chosen course for college in order for them to decide. Develops that

student’s inner skills, talents, and abilities based on his/ her fields of interest that can be used in

college/ tertiary level of education. Prepares Senior High School students to an international

workplace and shape them into a professional or worker that is skilled, equipped, and competitive.

The third conclusion is that there are many benefits that students receive from the Senior High

School program in aspects of college preparation. The fourth conclusion that the researchers got

is that there are many different advantages when students belong to the academic strand. And the

fifth and final conclusion is the effects of Senior High School programs on students can either be

positive or negative. But, according to the results of the research study, almost all Senior High

School students consider the positive effects of the program due to its benefits, impact, roles, and

function that can fulfill their goals and dreams in life (Bonquin et al., 2017).

Review of Related Literature

First-generation students are students whose parents have not earned a four-year degree or

the equivalence of a bachelor’s degree in the United States. By looking at factors that contributed

to the college decision-making process, such as family, peers, high school educators, and high

school mentor programs, we can better understand how these factors influence students’

experiences. Being the first generation in your family to go to college may be one of the factors

that influence your preparation and decision (Cabrera, n.d.). In another study, parents do not

influence their children’s decision to attend college. Today’s students are more likely to be

influenced by their friends. Other factors include external influence, availability of financial aid,

and internal influence (Boatwright et al., 1992).

Secretary Briones (n.d.) stated that the CGP is a program that helps students choose the

best track to take in SHS. The CGP modules are being implemented in both eleventh and twelfth

levels to further review their decision on the desired courses to take in college. Each student will

focus on one track, which will be determined by how well they perform in their academics after

finishing grade 12. Academic skills, employability skills, and technical skills are the three essential

skills to be called career ready, according to the Association for Career and Technical Education

(ACTE, n.d.). There is no definite tool to determine the conditions and influence of career guidance

programs (Shrestha et al., 2018) but in England, the impact of career guidance is measured based

on the non-conscious intellectual effort of the youth’s participation and engagement in the

development of the educational system and as well as their career field (Gutman & Schoon, 2013;
5

Wiglesworth et al., 2017). Career guidance focuses on the planning of a person's life by

considering a variety of factors. To obtain a wider understanding of himself and his surroundings

a perspective on the beneficial impact that may be exerted on society (Hatari, 1983) thus, schools

with such programs are giving students exemplary aid for their preparedness in their career or in

taking college.

To prepare for college-level coursework, approximately 40% of traditional college students

take at least one remedial course. One source of this problem, according to academics and

policymakers, is the misalignment of high school graduation standards and college academic

expectations. College readiness partnership programs try to address this issue by easing students'

transition to college. These programs, which are co-sponsored by a college and a university, K-12

organizations (typically high schools) are explicitly designed to prepare high school students to

enter college prepared to do college-level work. (Barnett et al., 2012)

In choosing a college degree course, students consider financial aid packages, scholarships,

career ambitions, and academic interests and decide where colleges they can complete their degree.

A student that comes from a higher income family usually has done through college search

(Gilbreath, 2017). Students either from low or high income seek scholarships. For that, in

preparation for higher education, they consider their financial status in choosing their degrees

(Long & Riley, 2007). Improving study habits are needed for college success (Hagedorn &

Tierney, 2002). It’s necessary for individuals entering tertiary education to prepare their wellness

and time management (Eisenberg, Golberstein, and Hunt, 2009).

College, often known as higher education, is the highest level of education. A student's life

chapter in which they will achieve their desired outcomes in the future. That is why they must be
6

sufficiently prepared before entering. They must initially evaluate five factors when preparing for

college including family income, a field of interest, college course choice, and their grades or

performance in school. All of these can be prepared at the senior high school level, which is

equivalent to the pre-college level. This curriculum is extremely important in terms of preparing

pupils for college (Bonquin et al., 2017).

Statement of the Problem

The main purpose of this study is to understand the preparation of senior high school students

for college.

Specifically, this research is designed to answer the following questions:

1. What are the students’ expectations for College?

2. How do grade 12 students feel about the transition from Senior High School to College?

3. What are the factors that influence the decisions of a student for their college preparation?

4. What is the significance of implementing senior high school for your preparation in

College?
7

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to:

a. Identify the students’ perspective or expectations as they prepare for their transition to

college.

b. Determine the emotions felt by 12th-grade students knowing that college is already waving

in their next school year.

c. Know the factors that influence the student’s decision for college.

d. Know the student’s opinions towards the implementation of K – 12 by DepEd.

Significance of the Study

This research helps to inform individuals to understand if grade 12 students are ever ready

for college that is ahead of them. Individuals that get a hold of our study can know the factors that

the students carry as they decide for college. This study can be of good use to senior high teachers

because they will know their students more by knowing why and how they prepare. This study can

also be of good use to junior high students, because one day they will also experience the factors

that might affect their college preparation. The results of this research are very useful not only for

the teachers and students but also for the parents, using this research can give them knowledge as

to where they can start in guiding their child.

8

Limitations of the study

This research has some limitations. The first is that the interview is via zoom app because

of the Coronavirus pandemic, this limits our observation from the participants with no physical

interactions. The second is that we cannot control the background noises that affect our interview

process. Different kinds of noises can be heard while interviewing our participants.

Scope and Delimitations of the study

The scope of this research is to understand the preparedness of Grade 12 students of RTPM

- DSHS for college. This research will tackle the factors, depending on each student’s situation,

that affect the students with college preparation. It will also discuss the expectations and emotions

felt by the students as they continuously progress with their education.

This study is delimited only for grade 12 students of RTPM - DSHS because they are the

batch of students to proceed to college in their next school year and this will be conducted within

a limited time frame with no physical interaction due to the protocols of the prevention of

Coronavirus pandemic.
9

Definition of terms

Below is the definition of all relevant variables used in this research.

College

An educational institution or establishment, in particular one providing higher education

or specialized professional or vocational training (Google dictionary, 2022).

Senior high

A secondary school that students attend in the three or four highest grades before college

(Your dictionary, 2022).

K to 12

The K-12 program offers a decongested 12-year program that gives students sufficient

time to master skills and absorb basic competencies. Students of the new system will graduate at

the age of 18 and will be ready for employment, entrepreneurship, middle-level skills

development, and higher education upon graduation (K12 Philippines, 2022).

Intrinsic Motivational Factor

Intrinsic motivation is defined as the doing of an activity for its inherent satisfactions

rather than for some separable consequence

Extrinsic Motivational Factors

Extrinsic motivation refers to behavior that is driven by external rewards.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The purpose of this research study was to identify and understand how the Grade 12

students of RTPM - DSHS prepare themselves in taking up college in the near future. The

researchers utilized the narrative approach in conducting this study. The data was collected

through an online interview method which lasted for only six (6) days due to social

constrictions and the series of stay-at-home orders and cordon sanitaire measures

implemented by the government of the Philippines through its Inter-Agency Task Force

for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases(IATF-EID).

Research Locale and Time of the Study

The research was conducted online through Zoom due to the ongoing pandemic which

prevented personal face-to-face in-depth interviews between the researchers and

participants. The collection of data lasted from January 2 to January 7 of the year 2022.

Research Participants

A total of ten (10) Grade 12 students of RTPM - DSHS were the participants of the

study from the following five (5) sections, three (3) STEM and two (2) ABM sections,

namely: Orion, Lysithea, and Apollo with two (2) participants each, Prometheus and

Valkyrie with two (2) participants each.

Research Instrument

The researchers made use of Zoom Meeting in conducting a well-structured interview

which is designed to obtain information from the ten (10) participants chosen. The aim was to

determine the college preparation of Grade 12 students of RTPM - DSHS. It contained the four (4)

emergent themes namely: Emotional State of Students’ College Preparation; Expectation About

College; Factors to Be Considered; Experiences in Senior High School.

Sampling Procedure

In undertaking the study, the researchers used purposive sampling. They chose to interview

ten (10) participants from the whole population of grade 12 students in RTPM – DSHS.

Participants were sought through social media platforms and personal contact. Initially,

participants were recruited and some were acquaintances of the researcher.

13

Data collection procedure

The interview was conducted via the zoom app and everything is recorded. The participants

were contacted through social media by the interviewer and were informed about the purpose of

the study. An interview schedule was prepared in advance to aid the researcher with the structure

and flow of the interview. All participants chose to have interviews where they felt more at ease

in their surroundings and thus allowed them to speak more freely and openly under research topics.

Open-minded questioning and follow-up interviews were used for this study. Each participant has

presented with a similar set of questions relating to their college preparedness.

Data analysis procedure

The data was then coded, processed, evaluated, and validated once it was transcribed. The

process of transcribing interviews can aid the researcher in gaining a better grasp of the subject by

allowing them to listen to and read the transcripts multiple times. Once all of the data had been

transcribed, golden data began. Following that, the data was evaluated, categorized, and arranged

into themes and categories that arose from the coding process. The themes that emerged were

given a code that corresponded to them. The last step was to evaluate the data by looking for

recurring themes and noting any similarities and differences in the data. The battle now steps

entailed data verification, which entails rechecking transcripts to ensure that the interpretation is

correct.

Ethical Consideration

All participants were informed about the details of the study. Participants in the study were

voluntary, and students could withdraw from the study without any consequences. The anonymity

of a participant was guaranteed. To ensure confidentiality participants were provided with an

increment code. Only the researchers had access to research data.

14

CHAPTER 3

The researchers were able to gather data for in-depth analysis and discussion through the

transcript of the interview from the participants. After analyzing the data, the researchers were able

to come up with four (4) significant themes that served as answers to the research problems. These

themes which will be discussed in this section were the following: Emotional State of Students’

21

Emergent Theme 1: Emotional State of Students’ College Preparation

1.1 Positive Emotions

Results have shown that college preparation has an impact on the emotional stability of

Grade 12 students. The participants experienced feeling favorable emotions and believing that they

were emotionally well-adjusted. Furthermore, the participants also have shown their feeling of

motivation and excitement knowing the fact that they are going to begin a new journey in college.

P4 and P8 expressed their excitement and motivation, in respective order, by saying,

“Uhmmm I am scared for what’s to come pero I also feel excited that I’m about to step

into a new chapter in life.”

“... ga huna-huna rakos ako motivation and inspiration and like– gina-say nakos ako self

na dapat, ‘courageous ka, Kar!’”

1.2 Negative Emotions

Even though good emotions were provided, the majority of the replies experienced

negative emotions throughout their experience. They either experience negative pressure such as

stress, fear, unmotivated, or anxiousness. P8 expressed an unpleasant feeling of doubt and a lack

of self-confidence in pursuing college.

“... usa ani kay kanang feeling na di pa kaayo ko ready”

“… ang ako pagka introvert like– kulang jud kaayo kog self-confidence, sige kog huna-

huna if makaya ba jud nako.”

“Naa pud koy anxiety ug kanang sige kog overthink …”

22

During this time of embarking on a new journey, students are often faced with uncertainty.

Uncertainty makes planning for the future difficult. The results show that a quantity of participants

with uncertainty gets the better of them. P7 expressed their realizations in pursuing college by

saying,

“I feel pressured and knowing that I am not yet decided that’s why I’m pressured.”

“maka pressure jud nuon sha kay wala ko kabalo unsay mahitabo nako”

Moreover, P6 shows their indecisiveness by saying,

“I'm still indecisive on what... career or what course kung unsa akong kwaon, kay libog ko if

pharma ba or med. Tech.”

In the occurrence of having college as their destination, findings show that the participants

are more likely to experience negative feelings such as worry, anxiety, and indecisiveness. The

replies provide a deeper insight into their mental health, as well as more tools for students to

examine their emotions and prepare psychologically for college.

Emergent Theme 2: Expectation About College

The participants say that the transition from Senior High School to College would most

likely be hard to do. The phase for adjusting with the environment and the professors are

considered since they stated that there is a great difference between secondary and tertiary

education such as being more intense and difficult. P5 and P7, respectively, says,
23

“Firstly, is difficult jud siya especially just what I said earlier na the course that I would

be taking is not something I'm going be good at since mutake kog civil engineering, and math is

really not my forte.”

“I expect college to be much harder than high school and that I will meet professors that

are very strict and inconsiderate.”

They have also stated the possibility of face-to-face classes to resume in college and that

would be also a great challenge for them in adjusting. P6 stated,

“And another pud ngano kong... hadlok pud mucollege kay diba mubalik napud tag; like

bright ang, ang mubalik ang face-to-face ingnig college nato so, I think malisdan.”

Aside from this, the participants also have an expectation of having a limited time since

most of the student’s time will be devoted to studying and making activities. P1 explained,

“I think I expect na kuan jd na naa may time to rest pero gamay kaayu. Kay most of your

time feel nako i-spend nimo na siya sa kuan, sa pagtuon or sa imong mga things buhaton related

to college. And if ever naa mn gani time I think ma-allot na siya for rest?”

Specifically, their relationships with their families, exposure to new people and ideas,

pursuit of personally and professionally relevant coursework, and progress toward their goals for
24

individual development all met or exceeded their pre-college expectations (Keup, 2007). In

college, you are expected to do most of your learning on your own. For every hour you spend in

class, you should plan to spend two hours out of class reading, studying, and completing

assignments (Frender, 2004). These articles are the details that can support the participants’

expectations.

Emergent Theme 3: Factors to Be Considered

There are different factors that can influence a student’s decisions about college. Each

student is led by life through various situations that may have an impact on their perspective in

college.

3.1 Intrinsic Motivational Factors

With pressure on their backs, the participants still have the strength to carry on because of

the motivation that they have for their selves. They do have different goals to strive hard and pursue

college. Some of these goals came from the statement of P1, P2, and P5 in respective order, these

goals convey that they want a future with a successful life and payback to their loved ones.

“Atung goal mn jd is to have a stable financial support sa atung self og maybe sa atung

future pamilya.”

“kanang ganahan ko ma-successful sa future”

25

“kay I also want to like spoil my parents or provide for them as much as they provided for

me; ganahan ko maka experienced sila og a great quality of life nga ilahang gipa experienced

nako.”

3.2 Extrinsic Motivational Factors

Students are also motivated because of some pressure that is given to them, some of these

are the expectations of the society and the pieces of advice from their respected people, such as P1

and P6 accordingly.

“Akong na-observe ra pd sa akong friends na nailhan nga dapat jd mu-strive hard ka

makahuman og college then find a work. If wala kay college, ang society mn gd pd or some people

will um… Ubos kaayu ilang paglantaw sa imoha if wala ka makahuman og college.”

“ahm the factors that influence my decision sa college kay first my family, because there

are times nga different option; or lahi mig choices. And I tend to hear their opinion or their advices

about me man pud so, yeah.”

26

3.3 Factors That Can Hinder

This factor may fall under the previous factors but the researchers would like to give

emphasis on this one. Some students’ decisions are limited because of certain situations such as

lack of financial support and the expenses to be spent in college, said P2 and P6 respectively.

“Usa pd sa maka-hinder kay the tuition sa school, like sa kamahal sa tuition.”

“Ang expenses sa college, kay ang mga, ang financial because akong i-take na course

expensive kay med.tech, unya because of the tuition fee pud so yeah. Mao ng the factors.”

The main difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation is that intrinsic motivation

comes from within, and extrinsic motivation comes from outside (Sennett, 2021). It was revealed

by the researchers that the grade 12 students in RTPM –DSHS have both of these motivational

factors. The goals that they wanted to achieve based on their self-satisfaction is the intrinsic

motivation they have, while the eagerness of them to pursue their goals for the purpose of

satisfying others is the extrinsic motivation they have.

There are a number of reasons why students don’t attend college, but here’s the reality that

many will only begrudgingly admit: there are genuine obstacles — dire circumstances that prevent

a student from continuing their education (Scholarship.com). In the interview, some participants

admit that their problem for pursuing college is the lack of financial support but this is only a factor

that might hinder them. The participants have also introduced their alternative ways to overcome
27

this problem. The combination of scholarship opportunities, federal aid, and flexible scheduling

options make college a reality for students who are serious about obtaining a degree

(Scholarship.com).

Emergent Theme 4: Experiences in Senior High School

This theme captures the role that the senior high is playing in the preparation for college.

Senior High School aims to complete basic education by ensuring that graduates are prepared for

a job, entrepreneurship, or further study. This is an improvement over the 10-year cycle, in which

high school graduates still require more education in order to be ready for the world. However,

participants show different opinions and reactions on their experience during their SHS years, may

it be helpful or not.

4.1 Advantages

The majority of the participants admit that Senior High School is indeed needed for their

further education and experience. They perceive Senior High as additional learning years to

prepare, enhance their skills, and to self-assess. P5 states their perception by saying,

“I think senior high is a very helpful stage in college because mura syag it adds more

years of learning; sad to say na it became online due to COVID”

“to be more kanang maayo and what we’re gonna take in the future since we have been

given two more years to master the subject that we would be needing.”
28

“to assess yourself if... if naa baka sa right direction and... right direction sa imong

layhan na kurso.”

4.2 Disadvantages

Regardless of how they perceive SHS, a number of participants find this program

ineffective. They either have inconveniences with their experiences or the learning system during

SHS years. P1 and P2 expressed their insights saying,

“Honestly speaking I do not think that senior high will be that much of a help uhh in me

finishing college or for as a preparation for college rather.”

“... ang subjects sa senior high para nako kay di’ ra- di’ ra pd kaayu maka-help sa situation

sa college.”

Additionally, P7 reveals their insights on SHS being virtually ineffective.

“senior high school during the pandemic, in an online class is not really effective, “

One of the unique features of the curriculum is the ability of the students to choose a strand

in senior high school. The senior high school strand contains subjects that prepare the students for

their careers in college and industry. Thus, the choice of senior high school strand is of great

importance (Alipio, 2020). Accountancy, business, and management (ABM); science, technology,
29

engineering, and mathematics (STEM); humanities and social sciences (HUMSS); general

academic strand are the four strands of the academic track. The well-intended SHS, however, has

had a number of serious issues that may affect teachers and as well the education of students. At

this point, DepEd needs to take more of a dialogical manner rather than a prescriptive stance; it

must be encouraging and empowering, not over-demanding and discouraging. It must capitalize

on the goodwill of people who want this curriculum to work. In this sense, less may be truly more

(Tabora, 2014).

Summary and Conclusion

The results of this study show that the 12th-grade students in RTPM-DSHS have dealt an

impact on their emotional state as they prepare for higher education. The participants showcased

a positive outlook and an expression of excitement knowing that a new journey awaits them.

Regardless of this, some of the participants have negative and/or uncertain emotions when they

realized that after this school year is another environment that is new to them. Moreover, the

implementation of DepEd as Senior High School to be the phase of preparation for students to

proceed to higher education has also garnered different oppositions. The participants indicated

their opinions, thus creating two sides of the equation: advantages; disadvantages. The majority of

the participants said that SHS was helpful to them because they were given the time, exactly two

school years, to enhance their skills and self-assess. On the contrary, some participants stated their

opinion that SHS is ineffective.

The participants are under different situations that suffer from several pressures which

were made to be the key to their motivations in pursuing college. The factor to drive themselves
30

for their dreams – intrinsic motivational factor, and the factor to work hard because of the

expectation of others – extrinsic motivational factor. The students’ decisions for college were

influenced because of the expectation from themselves and others. Furthermore, there is another

factor that can also influence a student’s decision and that factor gives a limit to their decision.

The participants say that a lack of financial support can shift their life to different careers but they

have also started an alternative way to supply that problem and that is applying for a scholarship.

Expectations of students about college have always been the same. Their perspective was

made from hearing college students’ experiences, parents’ advice, and related articles. It is truly

scary to experience a transition from a fun high school to a serious college. College is made to

ready us for the real world and we can only be pragmatic to it. The four emergent themes sum up

that the 12th-grade students in RTPM - DSHS experienced different emotional states as to what

they heard how serious is the adaptation to college and the pressure they got from multiple factors.

It also tells us their opinion of SHS as means of college preparation.

Recommendations

Based on the results, the researchers recommend broadening the range of participants

where all high schools in Dumaguete City are included as research participants. The researchers

would also want to recommend a face-to-face interview to observe the behavior of participants

while doing the interview. Lastly, the researchers suggest going deeper about the participants’

choice of career and as to what options they are limited to choose from.

heart. Okay. So, start nako sa first question. How do you feel when you realize that after this

school year you will be in college? How about the pressure that you are experiencing from

pursuing college?

P1: First of all, 96.) I feel sad kay kabalo ko daghan ng responsibilities i- 96. Sad Because of Added
Responsibilities

Daghan jd na siyang pressure. Dili nato madetermine exactly unsa ang

mga pressures, unsa ang mga challenges ang mu-come pero I know na mu-come jd na sila. So, to

sum it all up. I feel sad nga mucollege na kay kuan 98.) murag mu-end na ang high school life

and high school is one of the chada jd na samahan sa atong friends, teachers, and all. Then at the

same time, kuan, I feel, kuan pd, 99.) proud sa akong self kay nakalampas ko sa akong pagka-

high school then mu-kuan na pd. I should ready myself to take part sa journey sa college then

kuan, to relate it with your second follow up question is, the pressure, yes. Mao tung akong
38

giingon ganina na is tungad sa daghang responsibilities and college itself, lisod na ang mga

subjects and mu-add pd na siya sa mga pressure. That’s all.

I: Bitaw sakto sad na jd siya. Sige thank you for that answer. So, for the next question. Why do

you think college is an important stage to be prepared for?

P1: For me, college is an important stage to be prepared for kay ang, if mu-
100. To be Financially stable
in the Future
focus ra ta og mga jobs diri sa Philippines na maka-earn jd. 100.) Atung

goal mn jd is to have a stable financial support sa atung self og maybe sa

atung future pamilya. Sa akong nabantayan mn gd diri sa Philippines is that, if asides from

friends na nailhan nga dapat jd mu-strive hard ka makahuman og college

then find a work. If wala kay college, ang society mn gd pd or some people will um… Ubos

kaayu ilang paglantaw sa imoha if wala ka makahuman og college. So, for me, important siya

kay para daghang opportunity nga sa work na akong masudlan. 102.) In 102. To have a lot of

That’s all.

I: Thank you! Murag kaning next question kay naingon na nmo pero to recap nalang. So, what

are your expectations for college?

P1: Okay, expectations for college ako ng naingon. Sige so expectations sa

103. Limited time
college is lisod ang mga subjects nga i-take and 103.) I think I expect na

kuan jd na naa may time to rest pero gamay kaayu. Kay most of your time

feel nako i-spend nimo na siya sa kuan, sa pagtuon or sa imong mga things buhaton related to

college. And if ever naa mn gani time I think ma-allot na siya for rest? That’s all.
39

I: So, kuan, diba mu-decide na mn ta for college. So, next question kay what do you think are the

factors that makapa-influence sa imong decisions for college?

P1: Para nako ang factors na makapa-influence nako is somehow 104.) 104. Demand of the Future

ang una is ang… the… Like unsa ang gi-dictate sa future. Para nako mao

jd nay pinaka-unang factor kay ang factor na mag-think ka sa future nimo is like ganahan ko ma-

financially stable ko. I will complete college para naa koy degree then makasulod, hopefully

makasulod sa mga companies na big na mu-offer og decent amount of salary then that would

make me financially stable. Tapos, isa sa factors is I think ang kuan… akoang skills. Cause kinsa

mn poy musulod og kuan… mga… unsa ni? Um… decisions for college.
105. Skills Present
105.) Feeling nako apil pd ang skills nako kay dili pd ko mupili og course

nga dili angkop sa akong skills mao mn gani ng nay K to 12 then mga

ABM, STEM. So, STEM mn ko. So, I will pursue engineering in.ana pd. Isa pd na siya sa mga

factors which is akong skills. 106.) Then, one last factor na feeling pd nako
106. Friends’ Choice

That’s all.

I: So mao to sa?

I: Oo, sige.
40

P1: Ang pinaka- kuan jd, ang nakapamotivate nako is… kanang… feeling
107. To have a good
nako is… kuan dagay wait. Umm… 107.) feeling nako ang factor jd na Financial Standing

makapa-motivate nako is ang financial standing jd. Like kanang imohang…

unsa na? Imong standing financially kay, kuan mn, dili pd sa ingon na dato, dili pd sa ingon na

pobre pero like in the middle ra ba. Middle class ra gd. Dayon mao na siyay makapa-motivate

nako kay, personally daghan pd kong ganahan makuan… ma-acquire sa life. Like, yes, naa koy

ganahan ma-acquire akong mga needs and want. I believe nga that will also
108. To have a
involve finances pd. 108.) Ganahan ko maka-business somewhere in the Business

future which is going to need a big amount of money. That’s all.

I: Dayon, like, naa mn pd uban diba?

Or unsa ba? Unsay mga factors na

maka-ingon nimo og in-ana.

P1: Kuan, di’ mn sa. Wait. Sa uban, ang base on my observations og sa akong observations. Yes,

sa akong observations is ang pinaka-first jd ang financial support bitaw. 109.)

109. Lack of Financial
Support
Ang makita jd nako kay ang uban mn gd dili sa ingon. Like kanang below, like

those people na gasweldo ra og under average kay kuan, ilang mga anak kay

ma-. Akong nabantayan usually jd kay sa akong kaila pd is ma-force jd sila og trabaho og sayo.

Like after highschool ba kay mu-help pd sa family, in-ana. Pero, some kay successful ra mn pd
110. Undecided (In vivo
sila. Feeling nako naa ra jd na sa determination, and having goals na ma-achieve code)

ra jd, and also the will, yes. Mao na sa mga things na makapa-hinder na mu-

pursue ka og college which is ang financial support. And feeling nako usa pd ana kay 110.)
41

undecided, in-ana, yes, kana undecided. Then, next question nga follow up is what I can do to

overcome these. Umm… we cannot really tell kay wala pa mn ta sa present na time para ani nga

mu-kuan, mu-overcome pero what I have in mind is, kuan, have the courage, have the will. Di’

mn sya concrete nuon pero naa ra siya sa imong huna-huna bah. Have the mindset na whatever

happens mu… mangita kag way nga makalahutay jd. Be positive, yes. That’s all I can say.

I: Thank you. (utensils clinking) Unya karon diba, um, kutob ra mn unta ta sa grade 10 then na-

add-an og K to 12 kay para daw ma-prepare ta for college. So, ang question kay how helpful is

senior high sa preparation nimo for college? 111. Undecided (In vivo
code)
P1: Kuan, sa 111.) senior high is helpful jd siya para nako 112.) kay na-sort 112. Students’ are
sorted out by their skills
out ang mgs students nga those who have skills or those who have interests

in science, technology, science, and mathematics. Sa ABM which is accounting, business, and

management murag na-sort out jd imong mind like unsa imohang panan-aw nga naa nimo na

skills murag in that way ma-categorize ka kung unsa na field. Sa senior high mn gd ma-

categorize nimo kung asa ka na field or skills ma-belong and pagka grade ele- pagtungtung nimo

sa grade 11 mao ra pd ang specific subjects na imong i-take. So, 113.) murag 113. Skills are
enhanced
mas ma-enhance to na skills or field na imo i-pursue sa college. Parehas nako

kuan mn ko mu-pursue ko og engineering. So, na-belong ko sa STEM.

Umm… helpful pd siya nako kay kuan nagtudlo mn pd og mathematics ang sa STEM og

anything engineer related na mga subjects. That’s all.

I: So, mao ra diay to akong mga questions faus. So, thank you kaayu sa pag-participate.

about to step into a new chapter in life. 9.) When making a big decision like going to 9. Choose carefully
50

college you always feel umm pressure gani, 10.) pero cause you don’t
10. Hard
know man gud na if chakto ba imong decision pero I know I’ll get

through it lang.

I: Okay so thank you for that answer, so for the second question why do you think college is an

important stage to prepare for?

P4: Although going to college is not required, I still think it’s very important because almost all

high-paying jobs require diplomas man gud. Uuuh that’s why make sure to choose the right

course for your dream career mao ra.

I: And for the next question, what are your expectations for college?

P4: I expect it to be a lot harder than high school. Naa mn gd koy siblings and i’ve seen them

studying hard all night for exams. So mao ray akong murag window gani ay murag glimpse of

college.

I: Yes that is true. And for the fourth question, what do you think are the factors that could

influence your decisions for college? It could be your family or your personal … like that.

P4: 11.) For me I think ang family. Ang family ang main factor because you know umm 11. Family

all my siblings went to college and it makes me feel like I should go to college as well.
51

Pero I don’t feel pressured biya, since niadto sila kailangan pd ko muadto, I just think pd nga

college is a good idea pd as well.

I: Thank you for that, and for the fifth question, what are the things that motivate you to pursue

college?

P4: 12.) For me, the things that motivate me are my parents because I want them to
12. Responsibility

live a relaxed life as soon as possible. Once makahuman kog college pwede nako

choosing the right course in college. Pero kanang mura gali siyag extra time gani

for us students to think about what to do for college

cause I feel like murag we needed the extra two years cause most people don’t know what they

your time.

END OF INTERVIEW: 4 minutes and 22 seconds

Interview with participant #5:

(Noise)

I: Okey. Hello good evening, thank you for taking your time to participate in our research

interview. Are you comfortable enough to answer our questions today? If so, please be aware

that everything we discussed and all of your responses is being recorded for research purposes.
53

(noise) Rest assured that all your responses will be kept between us and will be used solely by

the researchers. Please be encouraged to answer freely from the bottom of your heart.

I: So first question [cross talk] first question kay, how do you feel when you realize that after this

school year you will be in college? Then, how about the pressure that you are experiencing from

pursuing college?

P5: 14.) Well, firstly since like kanang if kung hunahunaon na mucollage na ta next year I am

excited yet also very nervous kay I treat collage as a new experience and a

great experience as well; 15.) kay it is a murag stepping stone into the real 14. Mixed Emotion

15. Another Opportunity

world kay mura na s’yag that will be our last educational years before we

enter like kanang the working world, and like being an adult na. 16.) And
16. Feel Pressured
then, in terms of pressure of course very very pressure jud, especially, 17. Pressured about the
Future
because the course that I would be taking is not really my forte, or like not

really something I’m really good at pero I’m still gonna take the course

anyways 17.) and of ahmm dago kaayo siya na pressure in away kay how and what course you

will pick partially predicts ang imohang future kay it will be the job na you’re gonna be taking

and munana s’ya nga career ang imohang future.

I: Okay, Thank you. Tinood jud sa. So next question kay, why do you think college is an

important stage to be prepared for?

18. Different
P5: 18.) I think college is an important stage to be prepared for because

unlike sa high school and elementary, in college murag very loose na ang

teachers, ang… ang friend, ang people around you dili naka, dili na s’ya

very strict 114.) and like kinahanglan naka independent and you should
114. Independent
know how to make your, how to make decisions on your own na. You can
54

not rely on other people to make them for you, you can not have like kanang your parents make

decisions for you, you can’t ask your teacher anymore kay they want you to grow by yourself.

19.) So I think na kinahanglan jud ka maready for college kay dili najud 19. Not Spoon-fed
Anymore.
ka spoon feed inig college.

I: Thank you. So next napud ta na question number. 3. What are the expectations [cross talk]

what are your expectations for college?

P5: My expectations for college. 20.) Firstly, is difficult jud siya especially
20. Risky

just what I said earlier na the course that I would be taking is not something

I'm going be good at since mutake kog civil engineering, and math is really not my forte. 21.) So,

I would really ahm expect a college to be a little more difficult and a little more
21. Expect the
Unexpected
challenging so dapat jud maningkamot. That's all.

I: Okay. Then, next kay what do you think are the factors that influence your decisions for

college?

P5: The factors that I would consider sa college kay…my, ay again can you, can you repeat the

question please?

I: Sure kuan, what do you think are the factors that influence your decisions for college?

P5: 22.) Ah, the factors that influence me from college firstly, kay akoang parents because I wo-

its...ganahan man gud sila ug like an engineer so; like a little token for me to give to
22. Parent’s
expectation
them nga to take this course.

23.) Since ganahan ko nga like malipay sila and ganahan ko nga… kanang in the 23. Wanting the
parents
future once I pass and become an engineer like they would be very proud and happy to be proud
24. Hoping
25. Pay back
of what I've achieve. 24.) And then, another factor would be hopefully being an

engineer would be good, 25.) kay I also want to like spoil may parents or provide for
55

them as much as they provided for me; ganahan ko maka experienced sila og a great quality of

life nga ilahang gipa experienced nako.

I: Nice kaayo, okey no.5 kay [cross talk] tinood bitaw jud na. Okey no.5 what are the things that

motivate you to pursue college?

P5: Just like kanina ahm ahm, 26.) the people that motivate me of 26. Make the
parents proud
course my family especially my parents kay, ganahan- like it's...it's, it's

such an achievement for a child if makita nimo nga proud kaayo imong 27. Pressured

parents nimo, and sa... and any shape or form whether career man siya

nimo or something like that. 27.) And ganahan- kay I've seen how 28. Provide for the
family

proud my parents were during my sister nga kanang, like she became

how my parents wanted her to be; and I want them to feel that excitement, joy and happiness

again to me napd. 28.) And another would be I want to make my family stable Kay especially

karon nga COVID, like very unstable kaayo ang kuan like any source of income and ganahan ko

nga mabalik tung times nga everything was okay and ganahan ko nga maka-help pud nila in that

way.

I: Okay thank you so, next question what are the things that hinder you from pursuing college?

What do you do to overcome these?

P5: 29.) The things that hinder me from pursuing college kay lagi the financial 29. Financial
instability
instability, ‘cause I have also ahm come to a point nga I... I, l… kanang murag

nananghid kos akoang parents if pwede ba nga, I would stop like for a year or a few years so that

like pwede ko makapangita ug job like pwede call center or anything nga kanang mudawat ug

high school student. But of course, as a normal parent would disagree kay ganahan sila nga

mahuman unâ skwela and staff like that. 30.) And another factor would be that 30. Afraid to Fail
56

hinder, that hinders me from going to college which is I, I fear of failure, I’m 31. Difficult course
to
take for college
afraid of failure and embarrassment 31.) and the course that I would be taking

is not something I’m good at just what I said. So, I fear nga mahagbong ko and that is why I,

I’m very kanang murag scared and nervous to go to college just because of my course. Mao rana

sya.

I: Geh, thank you so the next [cross talk] ouh?

P5: sorry, sorry, sorry

I: okey, go ahead, go ahead.

P5: The things that I would… Sorry, sorry. 32.) The things that I would do
32. Seek for
to overcome these kay ahm, I have tried kanang getting scholarship here and there scholarships

so that… kuan… ahm I could be hitting two birds with one stone. Kay I would be going to

school, going to college and also be receiving a little bit of allowance from the-
33. A little help
from these scholarships. 33.) And in that way like, kana pd siya na money kaay

pwede nako sya ma-magive to my parents for a little bit of kanang assistance to them.

I: Okay thank you. Diri natas last question, how helpful is senior high school in your preparation

for college?

P5: 34.) I think senior high is a very helpful stage in college because mura 34. Add Years for
Learning
syag it adds more years of learning; sad to say na it became online due to 35. Advantage

COVID pero sen- if, 35.) if tarungon jd nimo ang senior high I think it’s a 36. A stage for
Preparation
really great advantage for us to learn more things, 36.) to be more kanang

maayo and what we’re gonna take in the future since we have been given two

more years to master the subject that we would be needing.

I: okay thank you for that good answers.

57

P5: Thank you

I: that’s all mao rating 7 questions and thank you sa imong time and participation and honest

answers. That’s all

P5: Thank you pud.

I: Thank you

P5: Thank you
