YILDIZ PORCELAIN FRCTORY

Yıldız Porcelain Factory was founded In the late 19th century In an a t t e m p t to reuiue traditional Turkish
tile and china manufacture, which was declining in the face of European importe. The f a c t o r y was
established in the grounds of Yıldız Palace In 1894. Known as the Imperial Yıldız Factory, it produced
high quality porcelain ware f o r the imperial palaces.
Rll the moulds and materials w e r e originally brought to Turkey from the French Limoges a n d S e u r e s
porcelain factories, whose technologies were among the most aduanced of the time, and subsequently
many moulds w e r e also prepared by local craftsmen.
The Yıldız Factory played an important role in creating a synthesis between Western and Traditional
Turkish Art. It continued In operation following the establishment of the Turkish Republic, and produced
w a r e which awakened Interest in traditional Turkish porcelain around the w o r l d . The hand painted pieces
made at Yıldız Factory today use traditional ouerglaze, underglaze and inglaze techniques.
Despite all the difficulties which beset the factory ouer the years, it succeeded in producing outstanding
pieces which earned it a w o r l d w i d e reputation in Its field. The porcelain produced in the early years is of
particular importance, because the factory employed notable Turkish a r t i s t s of the time, who w o r k e d
here side by side w i t h foreign porcelain decorators.
The largest collections of early Yıldız porcelain, produced as prestige pieces f o r the imperial palaces, are
those at Dolmabahçe Palace and other Imperial residences belonging to the Department of National
Palaces, and at Topkapı Palace Museum.

Today Yıldız Porcelain Factory Is still in operation, and open to the public as a museum under the
management of the Department of National Palaces. Rs well as porcelain in contemporary designs the
f a c t o r y also produces reproductions of early pieces In the collections at Dolmabahçe and other National
Palaces in limited numbers.

E s t a b l i s h e d in 1843 u n d e r r o y a l p a t r o n a g e as a s h o w p i e c e f o r O t t o m a n i n d u s t r y , H e r e k e was t h e l a r g e s t

w e a u i n g mill e u e r c o n s t r u c t e d in t h e O t t o m a n E m p i r e . It was e q u i p p e d w i t h t h e m o s t a d u a n c e d

t e c h n o l o g y of t h e t i m e a n d its c a r p e t s a n d f a b r i c s w e r e of o u t s t a n d i n g q u a l i t y , d e s i g n e d f o r u s e in t h e

r o y a l p a l a c e s . When D o l m a b a h ç e P a l a c e was b e i n g c o n s t r u c t e d the f a c t o r y s e t up a w e a u i n g in t h e

palace grounds.

In 1891 a w o r k s h o p w i t h o n e h u n d r e d c a r p e t l o o m s w a s e s t a b l i s h e d to m e e t t h e n e e d s of t h e p a l a c e .

H e r e k e c a r p e t s a r e d i s t i n g u i s h e d f r o m t r a d i t i o n a l r e g i o n a l c a r p e t s by t h e u s e of c o t t o n r a t h e r t h a n w o o l
