GEOGRAPHY FIELD PROJECT
HYDROELECTRICITY GENERATION IN NORTHERN PROVINCE
NAME: Chishimba Prosper
SCHOOL: Kasama Boys Secondary School
CLASS: 12
YEAR: 2025
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Chishimba Falls, located in the Northern Province of Zambia, is not only a site of natural
beauty but also an important center for hydroelectric power generation. This field project
investigates the stages involved in hydroelectric energy production at the Chishimba Falls
Power Station and examines its socio-economic and environmental implications for the
local communities. With Zambia’s growing energy needs, especially in rural areas,
understanding the operation and impact of such a renewable resource is essential.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The key aims of this investigation are:
- To identify the physical and technical processes involved in the generation of
hydroelectric power at Chishimba Falls.
- To assess the socio-economic benefits and environmental challenges associated with the
power station.
- To explore sustainable solutions that can enhance electricity access while preserving the
local ecosystem.
LOCATION OF STUDY
Chishimba Falls is situated approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Kasama, along the
Luombe River. The site is accessible via the M3 and D20 roads, with the last stretch
being a gravel road leading directly to the Chishimba Falls National Monument. The falls
are composed of three separate drops: Mutumuna, Kayela, and Chishimba. These falls
provide a natural elevation gradient necessary for hydroelectric power generation,
making the location geographically ideal for such a project.
