Food Safety

• Food adulteration is a serious concern in India, and various


laws and regulatory bodies have been established to prevent
it. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India
(FSSAI) plays a central role in this effort.

• The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is a


statutory body under the administration of the Ministry
of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. It
regulates the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale,
and import of food articles, while also establishing
standards to ensure food safety.
About FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards
Authority of India)

• Headquarters: New Delhi
• Main Role: Regulate and supervise food safety
in India
Key Functions:
1.Framing Regulations: Sets standards for food articles to
ensure safe consumption.

are registered or licensed.

3.Surveillance & Enforcement: Conducts food safety


inspections and raids.

4.Testing & Quality Control: Recognizes food testing labs


and ensures sample testing.

Adulteration in India
1. Food Safety and Standards Act,
2006
• Purpose: Unified all previous food laws.
• Key Provisions:
• Penalties for misbranding and adulteration.

2. Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860

• Relevant Sections:
• Section 272: Adulteration of food or drink
intended for sale – punishable with up to 6
months imprisonment or fine or both.

3. Legal Metrology Act, 2009
