DAR ES SALAAM INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

MODULE: CEU 07614 TRAFFIC ENGINEERING

GROUP ASSIGNMENT

Question 1:

You are shown a crash scene with a vehicle and a light pole. The vehicle was estimated
to hit the pole at 60km/h. The skid marks are measured to be 200, 205, 195 and 185 m.
A trial run that was conducted to help measure the coefficient of friction revealed that a
vehicle travelling at 70 km/h could stop in 100m under conditions present at the time of
an accident. How fast was the vehicle travelling in the beginning?
Question 2:

Using the spot speed data given in the following table, collected from an urban road in
Dar es Salaam City site operating under free-flow conditions:
a) Obtain Modal speed, Median Speed, speed limit and design speed
b) Compute the Time Mean Speed and Space Mean Speed

Speed Range Frequency

56-60 12
61-65 7
66-70 4
71-75 3
76-80 1

Question 2:
A set of 10 vehicles were observed for 80 seconds on a road segment that is 300m long.
The vehicle enter and leave the segment as per data shown in the table below.
Draw the time-space diagram and determine
a) Time mean speed and Space mean speed
b) Flow rate q
c) Density k
d) Average headway and Average spacing

Question 3:
A study of freeway flow at a particular site has resulted in calibrated speed-density
relationship with an equation: 𝒖 = 𝟏𝟎𝟎 − 𝟎. 𝟖𝒌.
Draw the following relationships; Speed-Density, Flow-Density and Speed-Flow and
evaluate

a) Free flow speed

b) Space mean speed at maximum flow
c) Maximum flow
d) Jam density
