Earthquake!

Prepared by Sharon Wong

Together with a partner, imagine you are a family of four people.

There is a mother, father and two small children aged four and eighteen
months old. Your family lives in a small farm in a remote country area, sixty
miles from the nearest town and emergency shelter where there is food,
shelter and medical attention. You have already prepared an emergency
disaster kit in advance.
One May afternoon while everyone is in the house there is an
earthquake registering 7.5 on the Richter Scale. Everyone having had
emergency earthquake training dives underneath the kitchen table thus
escaping injury. However the eighteen month old suffered a broken arm
when she tripped and fell. Everyone seems to be in shock.
The house and garage are totally demolished. You smell leaking gas.
Of course, communication and power lines are destroyed. The bricks from
the garage have crushed the family car. However two bicycles, an adjoining
trailer and wagon are left intact outside. There is still the disaster kit you
have prepared. But the wagon can hold only twelve items.
Together with a partner decide what needs to be done and what needs
to be brought with you if you decide to leave. Survival of your family
depends on what you do and what you take with you!
