Edward Bannister was not the only Black artist included among the painters and sculptors exhibiting well over a

American artist about the beauty of an African people. A sensitive awareness of her own racial origins was a basic
element in the work of this independent young woman. She was among the first Black woman to attend Oberlin
College, but it was in Boston the Edmonia Lewis first began to develop her artistic talent, accepting advice from

believed, encompassed all celestial bodies. By the time Edwin Hubble died in 1953, our concepts of the cosmos
had changed dramatically. Born in Missouri. Hubble his adult life in Southern California’s mountaintop
observations. Measuring the distances to mysterious spiral nebulae, long believed to be clouds of gas. Hubble soon
established that they were actually other galaxies. This discovery, while destroying accepted theories of the
universe, was only the start of Hubble’s pioneering research. As he systematically photographed the heavens and
measured the distances between galaxies. Hubble discovered that the universe was exploring outward, with each
more – distant galaxy hurding away at proportionately greater speed. Hubble’s concept of the expanding universe
brought us closer to understating the origins of the universe and laid the foundation on which modern astronomy
builds.
