Quranic Verses for Comfort and Healing

Surah Ad-Duha (93:5-8)

"And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be satisfied. Did He not find you an orphan and
give [you] refuge? And He found you lost and guided [you]. And He found you poor and made
[you] self-sufficient. So as for the orphan, do not oppress [him]. And as for the petitioner, do not
repel [him]."

This Surah reminds us that Allah's help and relief are near, even in times of despair.

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286)

"Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear..."

This verse reassures believers that their struggles are within their capacity to endure, with
Allah's help.

Surah Ash-Sharh (94:5-6)

"For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease."

This verse emphasizes that after every difficulty, there is relief, offering hope to those feeling
overwhelmed.

Surah Ar-Ra'd (13:28)

"Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah.
Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah, hearts are assured."

Remembrance of Allah (dhikr) is a source of peace and tranquility for the heart.

Surah At-Talaq (65:3)

"And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His
purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent."

Trusting in Allah's plan and relying on Him can alleviate feelings of helplessness.

Surah Az-Zumar (39:53)

"Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of
the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the
Merciful.'"

This verse encourages hope and repentance, reminding us that Allah's mercy is vast.

Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) Guidance for Depression

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also provided practical and spiritual advice for those
experiencing sadness or depression. Some of his teachings include:

● Supplication (Dua):
The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught specific duas for anxiety and sadness. One of them is:
"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from grief and sadness, from weakness and laziness, from
miserliness and cowardice, and from being overcome by debt and overpowered by others."
(Sahih Bukhari)

● Prayer and Patience:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor
hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that
Allah expiates some of his sins for that." (Sahih Bukhari)

This teaches us to view hardships as a means of spiritual purification.

● Gratitude and Positive Thinking:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Look at those who are beneath you and do not look at
those who are above you, for it is more suitable that you should not consider as less the
blessing of Allah." (Sahih Muslim)

Practicing gratitude can shift focus from what is lacking to what is abundant.

● Seeking Help Through Prayer (Salah):

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The coolness of my eyes is in prayer." (Sunan
An-Nasa'i)

Prayer is a source of comfort and connection with Allah.

● Recitation of the Quran:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The Quran is a healing for what is in the hearts."
(Sunan Ibn Majah)

Regularly reciting and reflecting on the Quran can bring peace to the heart.

Practical Steps Alongside Quranic Guidance

● Seek Professional Help: While spiritual practices are essential, depression can also
have psychological or physiological causes. Seeking help from mental health
professionals is encouraged in Islam.

● Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized the
importance of physical health, diet, and rest.
● Stay Connected: The Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged maintaining good
relationships and seeking support from family and friends.
