Part II: Students’ Attitudes Towards the Use of

TikTok in Widening Their Vocabulary Bank:

Figure …: Students' Perception of Learning Vocabulary through TikTok

The bar chart shown here describes the views of individuals on the
effectiveness and usability of TikTok as a tool for learning English vocabulary.
The chart represents responses to five separate statements, where the
respondents marked the degree of agreement on a scale of five: Strongly
Disagree, Disagree, Neutral, Agree, and Strongly Agree. The varying lengths
of each colored segment within the bars are utilized to visually represent the
percentage of participants who selected each degree of agreement for each
statement.
In brief, the results reveal an overwhelmingly positive attitude to using
TikTok as a vocabulary learning tool, particularly in relation to its engaging
nature and perceived usefulness. Notably, more than half of the participants
(56.95%) agreed with the statement that "TikTok provides useful and practical
vocabulary for daily communication," and another 8.61% strongly agreed with
the statement. This makes it the most positive statement in terms of agreement,
reflecting strong confidence in the capacity of TikTok to introduce learners to
words for use in everyday life. Likewise, a high percentage concurred (50.99%)
that "The short videos on TikTok make vocabulary learning more engaging,"
with 10.60% in strong agreement, reflecting the attraction of TikTok's format
as a learning device.
But opinion on whether TikTok is more effective than traditional methods,
and its general competence in assisting vocabulary learning, is widely
divergent. Under the subject of the proposition that "Learning vocabulary
through TikTok is more effective than traditional methods," the distribution of
response is more balanced, with a high rate of neutrality (29.14%) and a high
rate of disagreement (15.89%) or strong disagreement (5.96%). In the same
manner, although a great majority concurred (47.02%) that "TikTok helps me
learn new English words easily," a considerable percentage were neutral
(32.45%), while others disagreed (1.99%) or strongly disagreed (5.30%).
In short, the evidence suggests that although users perceive TikTok as a
very engaging platform that is able to offer useful everyday vocabulary for
communication, there is less agreement on whether it is better overall than
traditional methods and can make the learning of new words easier. Its
entertaining value and perceived usefulness stand out as the most noticeable
positives in the feedback.

Figure: Students’ Perceived Benefits of Using TikTok for Vocabulary

Learning
The bar graph "Students' Perceived Benefits of Using TikTok for
Vocabulary Learning" effectively explains why students like to use this popular
social media website to enhance their English vocabulary. The results indicate
that the frequency of student approval of the four mentioned benefits is an
instructional tool that meets the needs of current learners.
Most prominent among the perceived benefits is "EASY
ACCESSIBILITY AND CONVENIENCE," supported by as high as 55.60% of
the student body. Such strong consensus indicates the intrinsic value of TikTok
as an easily accessible and convenient platform that easily supplements
students' online lives and has a low threshold for language learning. Another
significant reason is the attraction of "FUN AND INTERACTIVE
LEARNING," which attracts 53.60% of the students. This speaks to the ability
of TikTok to transform the once tedious task of learning vocabulary into a fun
task, promoting a more enjoyable and effective learning environment.
The popularity of "CONCISE AND CAPTIVATING CONTENT," which
is most popular among 49% of the students, indicates the learning habits and
limited attention spans characteristic of digital natives today. The concise video
presentation format provided by TikTok easily commands the students'
attention and thus makes the vocabulary learning process a more organic
component of their online behavior.
While it is still a substantial benefit, the aspect of "VISUAL AND AUDIO
SUPPORT," cited by 44.40% of respondents, suggests that while the
multimedia capabilities of TikTok are appreciated for their enabling function
towards understanding, they are likely to be seen as a secondary benefit
compared to the ease of use and interactive nature of the platform.
The chart illustrates that students are drawn to TikTok as a vocabulary
learning platform chiefly because it is easily integrated into their daily lives,
adding to the learning experience's excitement and thrill. Beside, the concise
and engaging content on the platform continues to hold their attention.
Although the visual and audio elements add value to it, accessibility and fun in
learning are the most significant elements that shape students' favorable views
of TikTok as a vocabulary learning medium. The fact highlights the potential
for utilizing popular and appealing websites to facilitate language learning
gains.

Figure: Student Recommendations for TikTok as a Vocabulary Learning

Tool
The “Student Recommendations for TikTok as a Vocabulary Learning
Tool” pie chart shows the percentage of students who would
recommend their friends to use the platform to learn vocabulary. The
chart is divided into two parts, reflecting “Yes” (79.5%) and “No” (20.5%)
recommendations. The much larger blue section shows a strong
tendency among the surveyed students to recommend TikTok as a
vocabulary learning tool to others, with nearly four out of five students
agreeing.
In contrast, the smaller red section shows that about one in five
students would not recommend the app. This significant difference
suggests that the majority of students find TikTok a useful tool for
learning new words, most likely due to the benefits identified in the
previous discussions, such as the app’s accessibility and engaging nature.
However, the considerable proportion of students who do not
recommend the application warrants attention. Their hesitation may
stem from perceived disadvantages associated with the platform or
reflect individual learning preferences that do not align with its features.
Understanding the reasons behind this lack of recommendation could
provide valuable insights into the potential limitations of TikTok as a
universal vocabulary learning tool.

Table: The biggest advantages of using TikTok to expand

English vocabulary

The table recapitulates students' responses to the open question, "What do

you consider to be the most significant advantages of using TikTok to enhance
your English vocabulary?" The findings identify five overarching themes
arising from the content analysis of 137 meaningful responses, indicating the
perceived advantages of using the platform for vocabulary enhancement.
The most frequent benefit, with 45 students (32.7%), is the Natural
Vocabulary Repetition enabled by TikTok's Recommendation Algorithm. This
indicates that students enjoy the way TikTok's algorithm exposes them to the
same vocabulary in numerous different videos, thus promoting spaced
repetition and enhancing memory recall in an enjoyable way.
Following this, 35 students (25.7%) recognized Exposure to Real-life
Contexts of Word Usage. This implies that students enjoy seeing words being
used in real-life contexts like day-to-day conversations and role-plays so that
they can grasp the functional use of words instead of mere definitions.
Improved Pronunciation through Audio-Visual Learning was perceived to
be a great advantage by 29 students (21.1%). The presence of native speakers
and clear pronunciation in TikTok videos aids in enhancing listening and
speaking abilities, pronunciation, and audio recognition.
Moreover, 24 students (17.7%) of them recognized the learning of
vocabulary from different domains and in informal styles. TikTok offers
learners a wider vocabulary resource repertoire, including vocabulary from
specialized terminologies and colloquial terms that are not normally found in
traditional study materials.
In total, 33 students (24.4%) found Increased Motivation through
Entertainment and Social Interaction to be a significant aspect. The leisure
attributes of TikTok, along with the social learning process and peer support
found in comment sections, enhance general enjoyment and stress alleviation in
the learning process, thus leading to heightened motivation.
Lastly, the examination of the students' answers to the open question
reveals that the recognized benefits of utilizing TikTok for vocabulary
enhancement extend beyond sheer accessibility and fun, as implicated by
earlier closed-ended questions. Students put considerable value on the
repetition facilitated by the algorithm, the interaction with real contexts, the
development of pronunciation via audio-visual materials, the investigation of
diverse and colloquial lexicon, and the increased motivation that results from
entertainment and social interaction.
These findings accentuate the various ways in which TikTok is perceived
as a beneficial tool for vocabulary learning, thus enhancing and expanding the
insight gained from structured response options.
