Question Group 1 1

The document outlines a project management assignment focusing on concepts such as networks, activities, events, Gantt charts, CPM, and PERT. It discusses the limitations of Gantt charts and suggests remedial measures, as well as differences between CPM and PERT. Additionally, it includes a task to draw a project network and identify the critical path and expected completion time.

GEPM 375-Project Planning and Construction Management

CT-03
Total marks: 20 Time:
1. What is a Network in Project Management? Define activities and
events. Write down any two applications of CPM in project
management. 1+1+1+2=5
2. What are the limitations of a Gantt chart? Suggest a remedial
measure for one of these limitations. 3+2=5
3. What are the differences between CPM and PERT? 5
4.

Draw a project network and find out the critical path and expected
project completion time. 5
ANSWER:
1. A network is a flow diagram consisting of activities and events,
connected logically and sequentially.
A single, defined unit of work that needs to be completed to
achieve a project deliverable.
Event" refers to a specific point in time that marks the start or
completion of an activity.
• Two applications of CPM network: Planning, Scheduling

2.
Short Comings are:
Lack of degree of details
Review of project progress is difficult.
Activity Interrelationship can not be shown.
Time uncertainties shall remained
Remedial measures any of these 4 are correct:
Lack of degree of details :
• Sub activities can be shown effectively by marking stages on the
activity bar.
• Stages of sub activities are called milestones.
Review of Projects progress-
Existing bar charts can be modified to depict the progress made.
Showing progress by hatched lines.
Limitation of Bar Charts: Activity Interrelationship
Activity Interrelationship:
By merely depicting the concurrent activities by parallel lines of
bars in a project, the inter relationship between the activities
cannot be depicted clearly. If due to some reasons, time of
completion of Activity A is delayed by 1 or 2 weeks, how will B
and C will be affected? This not correctly depicted by bar charts.
Limitations of Bar charts: Time Uncertainties
Time Uncertainties:
Gantt Charts are not useful in those projects where there are
uncertainties in determination or estimation of time.
Examples-Research and Development Projects, Space vehicle
launch projects.
Are useful for small projects.

3.
Difference between CPM and PERT
• Time estimation:
-CMP: with fair degree of accuracy.
-PERT: Not so accurate and definite
• Cost and Time:
-CPM: Cost is directly controlling factor.
-PERT: Time is controlling factor.
CPM -Optimization of cost is given prime importance.
-Time duration for completion of the project depends on
cost optimization.
PERT - Assumed that cost varies with time.
- Attention given so that minimum cost results.
