Homework 4

Homework 4 for CE 322 requires students to analyze a structural model with six nodes and five elements under additional loading, using slope-deflection equations and static equilibrium. Students must present joint degrees of freedom, changes in member end-forces, and draw the deflected shape. The second assignment involves an inclined frame member, requiring identification of member end-forces, bending moment diagrams, deflected shapes, and evaluation of reaction forces.

CE 322 - Introduction to Structural Analysis

Homework 4
Due date: 12.05.2025, 09:45 Before lecture starts !

Homework 4 consists of two assignments. You are asked to submit them on the
above date, before the lecture starts!

1. An owner of a structure comes to your design office with a question. Her

structure can be modeled as shown in figure 1. It consists of six nodes and
five structural beam elements (two beams + three columns). The owner
considers to place an additional load on top of the right side as shown in
the model. Your duty as a design engineer is to investigate the additional
internal forces due to this
loading. 11 kN/m

a) Make use of the slope- 5 kN/m

deflection equations and
1 4 2 5 3
static equilibrium of the
joints to analyze the 1 2 3 5m

structure. Neatly present 4 5 6

the values of the joint
degrees of freedom
(DOF), and the change
in the member end- 6m 8m

forces due to the applied Figure 1: Structural model

loading.
b) Draw the deflected shape of the structure.

Note: The material properties are as follows: E = 200 GPa,

Ic = 0.006m4,
Ib = 0.006m4
2. Consider the structure with an inclined frame member.

a) Make use of the slope- 12 kN

deflection equations and
2 3
static equilibrium of the
2
joints to identify the 1
3m
member end-forces.
b) Draw the bending moment 1

diagram for both elements.

c) Draw the deflected shape
of the structure. 4m 5m

d) Evaluate the reaction Figure 2: Inclined structural frame

forces.
