Instruction
Clean lubricating oil and fuel systems are absolutely essential in order to
safeguard the engine and assure proper operation. Already when the engine
is erected on the test bed therefore, and especially on board, the pipes, cool-
ers, filters, valves etc. must be absolutely free of metal chips, rust, weld
beads, scale, dirt etc.
Before filling the engine installation with lubricating oil and fuel, the crank-
case, lubricating oil drain tank and fuel service tank must be cleaned by hand
to remove any residues left over after the installation work. Clean engine
building is an essential preliminary to flushing the systems.
Lubricating Oil System
Preparation before flushing
1. Mount the last pipe section above the main bearings other way round so
that the oil can run out horizontally towards the bearing. Blank off the oil
ports in the bearing covers.
2. Disconnect the crosshead lubricant linkages from the crossheads and let
them hang free inside the crankcase.
3. To check the system for cleanliness it is advisable to fix linen cloths over
the outlet ports from time to time.
4. Blank off the oil pipes to the intermediate gears, camshaft and reversing
valve. Here too it is essential that the blanked-off pipes be thoroughly
cleaned prior to fitting.
5. Immediately before engine inlet it is highly advisable to fit additional filters
with low-pressure loss (filter mess size 0.01 to 0.05mm, surfaceloading
1litre/cm2h) on the installation side. These filters are removed again after
flushing.

6. Where complete engines are installed in the vessel after running on the
test bed, without being dismantled afterwards, and the pipework has been
flushed separately (bypassing the engine). The lubricating oil connections
on the engine side are led straight back into the drain tank through hose-
pipes. To check the cleanliness of the system we recommend that a linen
cloth be fitted (linen sack of adequate area) at the end of the pipes from
time to time.
Flushing the System
1. Warm up flushing oil (normal circulation oil) to about 60°C (operating tem-
perature). Direct heating of the oil is possible by heating coil in the drain
tank, or with preheaters of the lubricating oil separators. The separators
must be in operation during flushing.

2. All valves in the system are to be fully open.
3. Good ventilation must be provided to avoid condensation. Accordingly the
round covers must be removed on the crankcase at the exhaust side and
on the crankcase doors at the fuel pump side.
4. Flush out the system. Operate the pumps alternately. The high-pressure
pumps must be operated as well.
5. Inspect and clean the filter in the system periodically. Flushing must be
continued until absolutely no residues can be found in the filter or the linen
cloths stay clean.
6. During the flushing procedure, the engine should be turned over from time
to time with the turning gear.
Preparation for Flushing
1. Remove any linen cloths fitted. Connect the oil pipes to the main bearings
and fit the linkages for crosshead lubrication. Secure all screw connection
again.
2. Remove all blanking discs fitted according to point 4, “Preparation for
Flushing”.
3. Drain oil from distribution pipe to the main bearings. Inspect the inside of
the pipes for deposits. Fit the oil pipe to the thrust bearing.
4. Inspect the bottom of the crankcase and clean it again if necessary.
Circulation
1. Let oil circulate for about 2 hours through all bearing points under normal
operating pressure and temperature.
2. Check all bearing points and spray nozzles for proper oil flow.
3. During circulation, the engine should be turned over from time to time with
the turning gear.

Flushing the Fuel System
1. Close the valves in the supply and return pipes to the fuel pumps.
2. Disconnect the supply and return pipes from the pump covers.
3. Fit temporary by-pass bends in place of the blank flanges on the main
supply and return manifold at the front end (on the flywheel end too in the
case of engines with more than 6 cylinders.)
4. Flush with gas oil 4 to 6 hours. Operate the fuel oil booster pumps alter-
nately, clean filters.
5. Before refitting the supply and return pipes, open the valves on the fuel
pumps to flush out any deposits present.
6. Remove by-pass bends. Inspect the inside of the pipes for deposits and
clean again if necessary. Close main supply and return manifold at the
ends.
