In 1681, a Spanish merchant ship sank off the coast of Panama. The ship, called Encarnación
sank during a heavy storm. The ship was part of a fleet that traded goods between Spain and
the Americas. In 2011, archaeologists were looking for ships owned by Captain Henry
Morgan, an English pirate. Instead, however, they found the Encarnación. They were
surprised that no one had previously found the wreck because it was submerged in only 12
meters (40 feet) of water. When the ship sank, the lower half of it buried itself into the seabed,
so, unlike other wrecks which are often looted, or suffer decay from ocean bacteria, the cargo
on board the Encarnación was unusually well preserved.
