PITOT/STATIC ANTI-ICE SYSTEM - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
1. General
A. Maintenance on the pitot/static anti-ice system consists mainly of component replacement/removal and installation and
functional check of the system. The pitot/static anti-ice system is electrical and maintenance of the system should be performed
or supervised by qualified personnel.
WARNING: The pitot tubes become very hot in a short period of time. Limit their time of operation on the ground and do
not handle an energized pitot tube without protective gloves.
CAUTION: Ensure pitot tube cover(s) is removed prior to energizing the anti-ice system.
2. Pitot/Static Anti-Ice System Pitot Tube and Static Port Maintenance
A. The pitot/static anti-ice heating element is an integral part of the pitot tube assembly and the static port assembly. A defective
heating element requires replacement of the pitot tube or static port. Refer to Chapter 34, Pitot/Static System - Maintenance
Practices, for their removal, installation and other pitot/static anti-ice system maintenance requirements.
3. Pitot/Static Anti-Ice System Components Removal/Installation
A. The right and left pitot/static current sensors are located in the left side console forward of the equipment panel (Refer to Figure
201).
B. Remove Pitot Static Current Sensors (Refer to Figure 201).
(1) In the cockpit, disengage L PITOT STATIC and/or R PITOT STATIC circuit breaker(s) located on the left circuit breaker
panel.
(2) Remove trim panels from left side console. Refer to Chapter 25, Flight Compartment Side Panels and Trim - Maintenance
Practices.
(3) Identify, tag and disconnect electrical wires to the left and/or right pitot/static current sensors (UC006, left and UC007,
right) and standby pitot and static current sensors (UC005, static and UC004, pitot).
(4) Remove current sensing relays from side console, by removing nuts, washers and screws and remove from airplane.
C. Install Pitot Static Current Sensors (Refer to Figure 201).
(1) Place current sensor relays in the install position in the left side console and secure with screw, washer and nut.
(2) Identify and connect electrical wires to current sensor; remove tags. Refer to the applicable Wiring Diagram Manual.
(3) Install trim panels on left side console. Refer to Chapter 25, Flight Compartment Side Panels and Trim - Maintenance
Practices.
(4) In the cockpit, engage L PITOT STATIC and/or R PITOT STATIC circuit breaker(s) located on the left circuit breaker panel.
(5) Perform pitot/static anti-ice system operational check.
4. Pitot/Static Heaters Operational Test
WARNING: Do not touch the heated pitot tubes. Heated pitot tubes can get very hot which can cause serious burns.
CAUTION: Do not let the pitot/static heaters on for more than one minute to prevent damage to the airplane and
components.
CAUTION: Make sure that the pitot tube covers are removed before you apply pitot heat to prevent component damage.
A. Preliminary
(1) Remove the standby, pilot's, and copilot's pitot tube covers.
(2) Apply 28.5 VDC, +0.5 or -0.5 VDC external electrical power to the airplane.
(3) Put the battery switch in the ON position.
(4) Disengage the L PITOT STATIC, R PITOT STATIC, and STBY P/S HTR circuit breakers on the left circuit breaker panel.
(5) Put the pitot/static anti-ice switch in the ON position.
(6) Disengage the DRAIN HEATERS circuit breaker in the interior junction box.
B. Standby Pitot/Static Heater Check
(1) Engage the STBY P/S HTR circuit breaker on the left circuit breaker panel.
(a) For Airplanes -6001 and On, make sure that the PITOT/STATIC COLD L-R-STBY amber EICAS message goes off
and the PITOT/STATIC COLD L-R amber EICAS message comes on.
(b) For Airplanes -5001 thru -6000, make sure that the STBY P/S HTR annunciator goes off.
