History Revision

Why did the world go to war in 1914?:

 Heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire killed by Serbian nationalists

 Growing tensions like such as Imperial Rivalry and Arms race and The alliance system all
provoked war as if 2 countries were in a war the ally system meant that potentially 4 more
countries could be pulled into the war because of it.
 Everyone was mass producing guns and weapons and were ready for war and what is the
point of getting all of these weapons if you don’t go to war with them.
 Germany stated that they would support an invasion of Serbia by the A-H.
 This caused Russia to mobilize it’s army and this worried Germany as they didn’t want to
fight a war on 2 fronts, against Russia and France
 This is why the Schlieffen plan was created, if it was successful they would have invaded
France through Belgium and then taken over Paris and then go back over to the eastern
front so that they could fight Russia. But it didn’t work out this way.

Why was the war not over by Christmas?:

 The war was not over by Christmas due to the Schlieffen plan failing. There are many
reasons why it failed but this meant Germany couldn’t take a quick victory.
 It was mainly because of the Strength of the oppositions but was also the exhaustion of
German soldiers, the supply problems, bad decisions by German generals and the limited
amount of communication.
 The battles of Marne was a decisive battle which marked the final failure of the German’s
plan and was won due to a gap spotted by the British and so they pushed through and made
them retreat.
 After this had failed the German’s tried to get the ports by the sea and by doing this created
trenches running along each other, they tried to outflank each other but in the end just
created long trenches running all across the border’s of Belgium.
 When they reached the sea had the battle of Ypres where the British were massacred and
this marked the beginning of Trench Warfare.
 The British were very supportive of the war and so lots of people signed up thinking that it
would be a fun time with his mates and didn’t realise the consequences of how bad it was.
 They used many propaganda techniques in order to get you to enlist and if you didn’t you
would be seen as a coward by your country.
