Pakistan – A Country Overview

Pakistan is a country located in South Asia. Officially known as the Islamic Republic of
Pakistan, it was established on August 14, 1947, following the partition of British India. The
country was created as a homeland for Muslims in the Indian subcontinent. Its name means
"Land of the Pure" in Urdu and Persian.

Geography and Location

Pakistan shares borders with:

 India to the east


 Afghanistan and Iran to the west
 China to the north
 The Arabian Sea to the south

It has a diverse landscape including mountains, deserts, plains, and coastlines. The northern areas
of Pakistan are home to some of the world’s tallest mountains, including K2, the second-highest
peak in the world.

 Capital: Islamabad
 Major Cities: Karachi (largest city), Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Quetta

Culture and Society

Pakistan has a rich cultural heritage influenced by various civilizations including the Indus
Valley Civilization, Islamic traditions, and British colonial history. The country is known for its
colorful festivals, traditional music, handicrafts, and hospitality.

 Official Language: Urdu (English is also widely used)
