From Protest to Progress!

“My courage always rises with every attempt to intimidate me.” - Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice
(1813)

Every year on International Women's Day (IWD), we come together to recognize women's vital role in
shaping a better future. Moreover, IWD is more than just economics. It's about celebrating the essence
of who women are - their diverse experiences, limitless ideas, and unwavering spirit.

Society often tries to box women into pre-defined roles. On this special day, we celebrate women who
break free from those constraints. Every woman, regardless of background, deserves to be heard and
valued as an individual. Her dreams, big or small, are worthy. Her struggles deserve understanding.

Women are the foundation of society, the unseen force behind progress. From leading revolutions to
raising families, from scientific discoveries to artistic masterpieces, women have always been there. Yet,
their stories are often untold, their voices unheard.

This International Women's Day, let's rewrite the story. We celebrate women who challenged the status
quo, fought for equality, pushed boundaries, and used their unique perspectives to enrich the world. We
honor the countless mothers, teachers, entrepreneurs, and everyday heroes who work tirelessly to
make the world a better place.

The Philippines showcases this indomitable spirit. Filipina journalists exemplify the power of
authenticity. They work relentlessly to bring the voices of the unheard to light, holding power
accountable and empowering citizens. In a world that tries to silence dissent, these journalists are a
force for good. They remind us of the importance of diverse perspectives and the strength found in
embracing who you truly are.

Let's go beyond just celebrating International Women's Day. Let us invest in girls' education,
empowering them to become the architects of their own lives. Let's champion women in all fields,
ensuring their ideas are valued. Let's create a world where women are not limited by expectations but
instead celebrate for their unique contributions.

Investing in women is investing in progress. Celebrating their authenticity creates a richer, more vibrant
world. Let's stand together, because when women rise in their entirety, the world becomes a more just
and equitable place.

Time has never been my friend.

I raced against it when I was ten, hanging around with my classmates in school, knowing that my parents
would soon transfer me to a new school, trying to make that one hour last as much as I could. I did it
again during the pandemic when time seemed to stop entirely as I spent most of my days at home due
to lockdowns. It was me against the ice cream cone melting in my hand, gone in the blink of an eye
before I could fully enjoy it. I swam through the days, closing my eyes today only to open them to see
tomorrow already slipping away.

I battled it with my blood, sweat, and tears in senior high school, facing endless deadlines and projects.
The war left its marks on me, red ink on paper and fatigue in my body. I was a soldier, a one-man army,
and the clock was a bomb that exploded with every passing second. I remember things as if they
happened yesterday, yet I cannot go back to them, my enemy akin to a train that stops for no one.

Time held me in place on my bed before I could see the stars in the sky, and it was the same force that
woke me from pleasant dreams as daylight began to seep in. It reached the deepest corners of my mind,
morphing into my greatest fears, giving me visions of the future that awaits; of the changes to come.

Time, time, time and time again, I would suffer its consequences. It has taken many things from me:
friends, achievements, family, my sense of self.

I have been constantly racing against it and losing the race ever since.

Since then, time has been my greatest rival. They say time is relative. But if that were the case, then why
do the hours pass by so slowly when I don't want them to, and why do the moments I want to last
disappear so quickly?

Even now, as I am writing this, I feel like I am continuously running and running out of time. If I had
started a week ago, would I have felt better? What about the week before that? Or the week before the
week before that? Or the month before the week of the week before the week before that? Or maybe a
year before all that?

In a world full of countless possibilities, of dreams and aspirations, of 'what-ifs,' time feels like a giant
wall preventing me from reaching them all. How could there be so much and yet so little time?

Blink, and you're just a junior high school graduate saying, "gusto ko new environment, ndi nako di
magskwela sa high school ah".

Blink, and who would have thought that I would effortlessly listed my name among the STEM entrance
exam takers, bravely going back, no, I should say, bravely staying in my school.

Blink, and from the decision I thought I would regret, staying became one of the best decisions of my
life.
Blink, and you realize that those people you once found "kasum od" have become the faces you want to
see every day.

Blink, and you're finishing senior high school today when you were just an 8th grader who got two
weeks off for COVID.

Blink, and these things will become just mere memories, and those people will become strangers.

Time, my rival.

Me? I'm timeless.

I'm timeless. I'm getting less and less time. I'm losing time.

When I look back on all those moments I felt like I had lost to time, I realized I gained something from it
as well.

An eye for an eye. A friend for the absence of an old one. A book in lieu of a painting. Failures, and then
accomplishments. Sadness, and then happiness. A timeless companion.

Time has never been my friend, but I guess you could say I'm getting used to the company.

Tick- tock, tick tock, my time is up for this chapter.

In the midst of staying at home during quarantine, while most of us are complaining due to boredom or
lack of food and daily necessities, there are people out there risking their lives for our protection. We
recognize a lot of fictional characters like Iron Man and Spiderman as two of our most idolized
superheroes. But as the world continues the battle during this pandemic there are heroes out there who
don’t need super powers to show that they can make a difference. These are none other than our
beloved frontliners.

As of now, doctors, nurses, delivery drivers, security guards, policemen and more have a very big
responsibility. To keep the people safe during lockdown to prevent the spread of Covid-19, and to treat
those who are suffering from the virus day by day. We see them as brave warriors fighting for our safety.
But as we look closer, they are also normal people who feel fear, that every time they expose
themselves to the virus, they are stepping one foot into the grave. Now, a lot of people are cheering
them on in order to lift their spirits every time they go to work.

In order to send messages of strength and encouragement to our fronliners, Havas Ortega has currently
transformed digital billboards in Manila. They now display digital comic books featuring our frontliners
as superheroes. Frontline Heroes include characters such as Commander Doctor, Super Nurse, Incredible
Guard, and many more.

With all the hard work our real life heroes have put into our safety, the least we can do is to provide
support and follow the protocols issued in our communities especially during lockdown. As of now,
Havas Ortega aims to do just that using the tagline, #TuloyAngLaban for people to send inspiring
messages of gratitude to our frontliners. May this be a ray of hope to everyone that we can indeed
overcome this pandemic.

According to Jos Ortega, CEO of Havas Ortega, Frontline Heroes is a way of directly expressing our
message of strength to our frontliners. That Cheering them on as they go to work, will lift their spirits as
they go home. He also added that hopefully, the empty roads will become less a reminder of isolation,
but rather a source of energy and inspiration.

With every passing day, and the battle against Covid-19 continues, we have brave heroes on our side
protecting us no matter how great the danger; heroes who don’t need superpowers to be recognized as
one.

READ: Rich Education, Accurate Destination!

“The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read.", once Mark
Twain said. This line speaks volume as for today, reading is a skill least mastered and loved by the
younger generation. With the rise of technology, children are overwhelmed with many possibilities and
activities that put reading at the bottom of their priority. What kind of future awaits us all if the torch of
learning has been stolen and replaced by distractions?

I like to think of the power of reading as the same as the power of saving and investing money. Once you
invest in the right business, you gain profits. With reading, when you pick the right book, you gain
benefits that can build a different kind of wealth, one that cannot be taken away -education.

Education starts through reading. Producing sounds to form words, combining words to create
sentences and comprehending sentences to understand more about life are the first few steps to
discover and unleash your full potential to face the world.

Mastering the skill of reading means strengthening the brain, improving language skills, increasing
concentration and discipline and improving creativity and imagination. These good qualities may help
one to surpass whatever obstacles that may come along the way with confidence and resiliency.

Moreover, instilling love of reading at an early age is the key that unlocks the door to lifelong learning.
Children who value books are more motivated to read on their own and will likely to continue to hold
that value for the rest of their lives. Reading helps children learn to make sense not only of the
environment around them but also the people in it. it teaches them sympathy and empathy. Therefore,
there is no best time to plant the seeds of love for reading in them but

As we continue to shape the young and create readers out of them, we are also transforming them to
become responsible citizens of their communities. A community of success where readers are leaders,
teachers, engineers, lawyers, film makers, fashion designers, painters, and all other professions that can
serve their nation best.

Truly, reading is the best investment you can make in yourself that can yield great dividends in the
future. With the right and rich education, you will surely arrive at a great destination. One that is both
rewarding and inspiring.

To a more brilliant tomorrow, choose the right investment and the best investment is you!
