Allí preguntara el Rey:
—¿Quién es esa que así habla?
Respondiera el Arzobispo:
—Vuestra hija doña Urraca.
—Calledes, hija, calledes,
no digades tal palabra,
que mujer que tal decía
meresce de ser quemada.
Allá en Castilla la Vieja
un rincón se me olvidaba,
Zamora había por nombre,
Zamora la bien cercada;
de una parte la cerca el Duero,
de otra, Peña tajada,
del otro la Morería;
¡Una cosa es muy preciada!
¡Quien os lo tomare, hija,
la mi maldición le caiga!

cuando en Castilla reinó,
¡las barbas que le salían
y cuán poco las logró!
Á pesar de los franceses
los puertos de Aspa pasó;
siete días con sus noches
en campo los aguardó.
Y viendo que no venían
á Castilla se volvió.
Matara al Conde de Niebla
y el condado le quitó,
y á su hermano don Alonso
en las cárceles echó.
Después que le tuvo preso
un pregón hacer mandó
que el que rogase por él
que le diesen por traidor.
No hay dama ni caballero
que por él rogase, no,
si no fuera una su hermana
que al buen Rey se lo pidió.
—Rey don Sancho, rey don Sancho,
hermano mío y señor,
cuando yo era pequeña
sé que un dón me prometió;
agora que soy crecida,
señor, otorgadmeló.
—Pedidlo vos, mi hermana,
mas con una condición;
que no me pidáis á Burgos,
á Burgos ni á León,
ni á Valladolid la rica,
ni á Valencia de Aragón;
cualquier otra cosa, hermana,
no se os ha de negar, no.
—Señor, yo no pido á Burgos,
á Burgos ni á León,
ni á Valladolid la rica,
ni á Valencia de Aragón;
lo que pido es á mi hermano,
que le tenéis en prisión.
—Pláceme, le dijo, hermana,
mañana os le daré yo.
—Vivo le habéis de dar, vivo,
vivo, que no muerto, no.
—Mal háyades vos, hermana,
y quien tal os consejó;
que mañana de mañana

legado es el rey don Sancho

sobre Zamora, esa villa;
muchas gentes trae consigo,
que haberla mucho quería.
Caballero en un caballo,
y el Cid en su compañía,
andábala al rededor,
y el Rey así al Cid decía:
—Armada está sobre peña
tajada toda esta villa,
los muros tiene muy fuertes,
torres há en gran demasía,
Duero la cercaba al pié,
fuerte es á maravilla,
no bastan á la tomar
cuántos en el mundo había;
si me la diese mi hermana,
más que á España la querría.
Cid, á vos crió mi padre,
mucho bien fecho os había;
fízoos mayor de su casa
y caballero en Coímbra
cuando la ganara á moros.
Cuando en Cabezón moría,
á mí y á los mis hermanos
encomendado os había;
jurámosle allí en sus manos
facervos merced cumplida.
Fíceos mayor de mi casa,
gran tierra dado os tenía,
que vale más que un condado,
el mayor que hay en Castilla.
Yo vos ruego, don Rodrigo,
como amigo de valía,
que vayades á Zamora
con la mi mensajería,
y á doña Urraca mi hermana
decid que me dé esa villa
por gran haber ó gran cambio,
como á ella mejor sería.
Á Medina de Rioseco
yo por ella la daría,
con todo el Infantazgo,
y también le prometía
á Villalpando y su tierra,
ó Valladolid la rica,
ó á Tiedra, que es buen castillo;
y juramento la haría
con doce de mis vasallos
de cumplir lo que decía;
y si no lo quiere hacer,
por fuerza la tomaría.—
El Cid le besó la mano,
del buen rey se despedía,
llegado había á Zamora
con quince en su compañía.

ntrado ha el Cid en Zamora,

en Zamora, aquesa villa,
llegado ha ante doña Urraca,
que muy bien lo recibía;
dicho le había el mensaje
que para ella traía.
Doña Urraca que lo oyó
muchas lágrimas vertía,
diciendo:—¡Triste cuitada!
don Sancho ¿qué me quería?
No cumpliera el juramento
que á mi padre fecho había;
que aun apenas fuera muerto,
á mi hermano don García
le tomó toda su tierra
y en prisiones lo ponía,
y cual si fuese ladrón
agora en ellas yacía.
También á Alfonso mi hermano
su reino se lo tenía;
huyóse para Toledo,
con los moros está hoy día.
Á Toro tomó á mi hermana,
á mi hermana doña Elvira;
tomarme quiere á Zamora,
¡gran pesar yo recibía!
Muy bien sabe el rey don Sancho
que soy mujer femenina,
y no lidiaré con él;
mas á furto ó paladina
yo haré que le dén la muerte,
que muy bien lo merecía.—
Levantóse Arias Gonzalo
y respondido la había:
—Non lloredes vos, señora;
yo por merced os pedía
que á la hora de la cuita
consejo mejor sería
que non acuitarvos tanto,
que gran daño á vos vendría.
Hablad con vuesos vasallos,
decid lo que el Rey pedía,
y si ellos lo han por bien
dadle al Rey luégo la villa.
Y si non les pareciere
facer lo que el Rey pedía,
muramos todos en ella,
como manda la hidalguía.
La Infanta tuvo por bien
facer lo que le decía;
sus vasallos la juraron
que antes todos morirían
cercados dentro en Zamora
que no dar al Rey la villa.
Con esta respuesta el Cid
al buen Rey vuelto se había;
el Rey, cuando aquesto oyó,
al buen Cid le respondía:
—Vos aconsejasteis, Cid,
no darme lo que quería,
porque vos criásteis dentro
de Zamora aquesa villa.
Y á no ser por la crianza
que en vos mi padre facía,
luégo os mandara enforcar;
mas de hoy en noveno día
os mando vais de mis tierras
y del reino de Castilla.

l Cid fué para su tierra;

con sus vasallos partía
para Toledo, do estaba
Alfonso cuando fuía.
Los condes y ricos homes
al rey don Sancho decían,
no perdiese tal vasallo
y de tanta valentía
como es Rúy Díaz el Cid,
qu’es muy grande su valía.
El Rey vido qu’es muy bien
facer lo que le decían;
y fablando á Diego Ordóñez,
mandóle que al Cid le diga
que se venga luégo á él,
que como bueno lo haría,
y que le haría el mayor
de los que en su casa había.
Ordoño fué tras del Cid,
su mensaje le decía.
El Cid se había aconsejado
con los suyos que tenía
si haría lo que el Rey manda:
su parecer les pedía.
Que se vuelva al Rey, dijeron,
pues su disculpa le envía;
el Cid con ellos se vuelve.
El Rey cuando lo sabía
dos leguas salió á él,
quinientos van en su guía.
El Cid, cuando vido al Rey,
de Babieca descendía;
besóle luégo las manos,
para el real se volvía
y todos los castellanos
gran placer con él habían.

Zamora ya está cercada;
de un cabo la cerca el Rey,
del otro el Cid la cercaba.
Del cabo que el Rey la cerca
Zamora no se da nada.
Del cabo que el Cid la aqueja
Zamora ya se tomaba.
Doña Urraca en tanto aprieto
asomóse á una ventana,
y allí de una torre mocha
estas palabras fablaba.
