1. Unit Masonry
1.1 General
This section covers the specifications of Masonry work. Unless otherwise specified in this
section, reference shall he made to the Egyptian Code for Design, Construction of Masonry
Works 1994 and ECP 204.
1.2 Submittals
The following documents shall be submitted for each type of blocks or bricks:
1. Name of manufacturer
2. Type Of block or bricks machinery
3. Capacity of plant and present stocks available
4. Properties of each type and results of previous tests
5. Means of identification of blocks and bricks
1.3 Samples and Testing
1. Samples of blocks or bricks for every type shall be submitted for approval to the
Organization after approvals are given on the submittals indicated in item (1.2).
2. From the first batches of blocks or bricks,
Submit 3 (three) sets of Samples for each type and color of the following:
1. Accessories embedded in masonry.
2. Samples of proposed masonry unit to be submitted for testing in approved
independent laboratories at the expense of the Contractor.
3. The tests shall conform to ES 1292 “Concrete Bricks and Blocks” and ASTM
C129-17 “Standard Specification for Nonloadbearing Concrete Masonry Units”.
3. The tests shall comprise:
a. Checking of dimensions
b. Compressive strength
c. Fire rating.
4. Upon final approval on material and samples, the Contractor shall construct a sample
panel (2x1.5 m) for each type of walls to be approved by the Organization. The
samples shall be kept in place until masonry work has been completed and accepted.

5. During the course of work, quality control tests comprising all tests shall be
conducted at the Contractor expense for each type, for every 2000 blocks or 5000
bricks supplied to the site.
6. In case the source of supply is changed, the Contractor shall submit all data required
and shall conduct all tests stated in this item to prove conformance to the
specifications.
7. Preconstruction Testing Service: The Contractor shall perform at his own expense all
required preconstruction testing by the Organization from a qualified independent
testing. Retesting of materials that fail to comply with specified requirements shall
be done at Contractor's expense.
8. Fire-Resistance Ratings: Where indicated, provide units that comply with
requirements for fire- resistance ratings indicated as determined by testing according
to ASTME119, by equivalent masonry thickness, or by other means approved by the
Organization.
1.4 Materials
1.4.1 Cement
Cement shall conform to the Egyptian Specifications ES 373 “Ordinary Portland Cement
and Rapid Hardening Cement” or any type approved by the organization.
1.4.2 Sand
Sand shall be delivered from approved source and shall conform to ES 1108 “Sand for
Masonry Mortars”. The total soluble chlorides present in sand shall not exceed 0.06% of
weight of dry sand. The total soluble sulphates (as SO3) shall not exceed 0.044%.
1.4.3 Water
Only clean fresh water from mains or other sources approved by the Organization shall be
used. When doubt exists, water shall be tested in approved laboratories.
1.4.4 Hollow Concrete Blocks
Hollow concrete blocks shall be obtained from reputable manufacturers approved by the
Organization and shall conform to ES 1292. Ordinary Portland cement or Portland blast
furnace cement should be used in manufacture together with approved type of aggregates
conforming to ES 1109. Approved admixtures may be used to improve certain properties
(as setting time) on condition that no harmful effect occurs to the other concrete
properties. The compressive strength 50 kg/cm2, the density 1250Kg/m3 and to be receive
minimum 15mm cement plaster both sides of walls.

Allowance in dimensions shall not exceed +3 mm in length, ±3mm in width and +3mm
and -5 mm in height. The minimum average compressive strength for 5 units shall not be
less than 50 Kg/cm2. The minimum strength for one unit shall not be less than 40 Kg/cm2.
1.4.5 Solid Concrete Bricks
Solid concrete bricks shall be obtained from approved manufacturers and shall conform to
ES 1292. The percent of voids shall not exceed 25%. The average compression stress
shall not be less than 70 Kg/cm? (per 10 units) and 56 Kg/cm'’ for one unit.
The typical nominal dimensions according to Egyptian Code, (length x width x height) of
various types of bricks are as follows:
1. 400 x 100 x 200 mm
2. 400 x 200 x 150 mm
3. 200 x 100 x 60 mm
Or 400 x 200 x 200 mm (Hollow concrete blocks of voids filled with concrete according
to the Organization requirement).
1.4.6 Masonry Accessories
1. Masonry ties shall be product of specialized manufacturer's approved by
Organization. The ties shall be made of galvanized steel.
2. U Shaped ties may be used for connecting walls to concrete elements and
connecting masonry concrete elements.
3. Dovetail joints of cross section 25 x 2.5 mm shall be used for connecting walls to
concrete columns; Unless otherwise shown on drawing, ties shall be installed every
four courses. The anchor slots shall be securely fixed in concrete shutter before
placement of concrete. The tail shall not be less 150 mm length. Unless otherwise
shown on drawing, dovetail joints shall be installed every four courses.
Dovetail to be used when required and to be according to approved shop drawing.
1.5 Mortars
Mortar for concrete hollow blocks and concrete bricks walls shall consist of 300 kg cement
to one cubic meter of sand. Where required for workability plasticizing additives approved
by the Organization shall be added according to manufacturer's approved directions.

The cement and sand shall be measured in proper gauge boxes on a boarded platform.
Ingredients including admixtures shall be mixed by means of an approved mechanical batch
mixer. Mortars shall be used within two hours of mixing.
Refractory Mortar: Medium-duty ground fireclay or alumina refractory mortar comply with
ASTM C199.
1.6 Laying of Brick Work
All brickwork shall be set out and built to the respective dimensions, thickness and heights
shown on the drawings.
Solid bricks are to be used for construction of toilets partitions, sound proof partition,
courses directly below finish levels and all external wall of the façade.
Provide reinforced concrete lintels for all openings. Lintel's cross section not less than wall
thickness according to ECP.
Reinforced concrete framing shall be constructed in the perimeter of openings of area equal
or larger than 0.25 x 0.25 m and are considered to be included in the price of brick walls
Provide reinforced concrete horizontal intermediate ties for walls exceeding 4 m height as
well as on top of walls not ended with beams or ceilings. Also vertical reinforced concrete
posts shall be provided where walls areas exceed 16 m2. The concrete and steel
reinforcement shall be included in the rate of masonry work.
In dry weather, concrete bricks and blocks shall be well soaked before being used and the
tops of walls left off shall be wetted before work is commenced.
Before lying of bricks or blocks check that metal ties anchor (slots) are securely fixed in
their places in columns. Install dovetail ties every four courses.
All bricks and blocks shall be well buttered with mortar before being laid and all joints shall
be thoroughly flushed up as the work proceeds.
Brick work shall be carried up in a uniform manner, no one portion being raised more than
1.00 meters above another at one time. All perpends, quoins...etc. shall be kept strictly true
and square and the whole properly bonded together and levelled round each floor.
Brick wall shall generally be built in Flemish bond, half brick walls blocks and casings to
cavity walls, and unless otherwise directed by the Organization shall be built in stretcher
bond. Alternatively, half-brick walls in facing shall be built with snap headers to match
bond of solid walls. All concrete block units shall be laid in running bond with vertical
joints of one course over the center of the unit in the proceeding course,
No four courses shall rise more than 4 (four cm) above the same laid dry.

Provide continuous masonry joint reinforcement Install entire length of reinforcement in
mortar with a maximum cover of 25 mm from face of masonry and finish mortar joint to
normal thickness. Lap reinforcement a minimum of 150 mm.
Space reinforcement not more than 400 mm each second course and 200 mm parapet walls.
Provide continuity at corners and wall intersections by using prefabricated "L" and "T"
sections. Cut and bend reinforcing units as directed by manufacturer for continuity at
returns, offsets, column fireproofing, pipe enclosures, and other special conditions.
Seismic Anchors: Units consisting of a metal anchor section and a connector section
designed to engage a continuous wire embedded in mortar joint.
Anchor masonry to concrete with galvanized steel anchors embedded as indicated in
masonry joints and attached to concrete
Provide galvanized steel anchors in horizontal and vertical joints, but not less than one tie
for 0.25 sq.m of wall area, spaced not to exceed 800 mm horizontally and 600 mm vertically
according to ECP and comply with five subparagraphs below, unless otherwise indicated;
1. Mill-Galvanized, Carbon-Steel Wire: BS 4482:2005/ ASTM A82; with BS EN
10244-2:10244-2:2009.
2. Hot-Dip Galvanized, Carbon-Steel Wire: BS 4482:2005 / ASTM A82; with
ASTM A153/A153M, Class B-2 coating
3. Galvanized Steel Sheet: ASTM A653/A653M, Commercial Steel, G60 (Z180)
zinc coating.
4. Steel Sheet, galvanized after Fabrication: ASTM A1008/A 1008M, Commercial
Steel, hot-dip galvanized after fabrication to comply with ASTM A 153/A 153M.
5. Wire Ties, General: Unless otherwise indicated, size wire ties to extend at least
halfway through veneer but with at least 16 mm cover on outside face. Outer ends
of wires are bent 90 degrees and extend 50 mm parallel to face of veneer.
Joints in masonry walls that are to be plastered shall be racked out to a depth of 1.5 cm to
form a key with plaster face of masonry units. Joints in facing brick walls shall be formed
with steel bar and tooled to a smooth concave configuration. Joints shall be pointed with
rich cement mortar cement according to the stipulations stated in section (11) Plaster.
Brick and block work shall be sprayed with water twice a day for a minimum of seven days.
Do not allow bonding of top of walls to top concrete element. Provide rock wool mat at
separation.
Cover all joints in brick walls or between walls and concrete columns and beams with
galvanized steel metal lath 400mm. width. The lath shall be fixed to walls and concrete
elements using nails and shall receive a scratch coat according to the stipulations stated in
Plasters section.

1.7 Fire Rated Masonry Joint
Joints between fire wall top surface and the underside of the overlying slab or deck shall be
sealed at both faces of wall or partitions with silicone-based fire rated sealant of same fire
resistance rating as wall or partition, ensure gap at top is filled and sealed and shall include
rock wool and fire-rated silicone-based sealant joint for joint filling at both faces of the
assembly to meet wall fire rating and the following:
- Rockwool 100kg/m3 density, thermal conductivity is 0.08@ (250◦C), provide suitable
type for friction fit in voids. Follow fire stopping materials manufacturer's
recommendations.
- Rockwool shall be water repellent non-hygroscopic and non-capillary. The moisture
has no effect on the material stability
- Rockwool material shall be non-combustible when testing according to ASTM 136
and BS 476 part 4 it exhibits zero rating for all surfaces burning characteristics, it
behaves in complete accordance with ASTM 84 with respect to flame spread & smoke
developed and fuel contribution.
- Silicone Sealant: Silicone sealant shall cure in the presence of atmospheric moisture to
produce durable and flexible seal. It shall form airtight and watertight bonds with most
common building materials in any combination including cement, masonry, steel and
aluminum. Sealant single component with consistency of soft caulk at temperatures
ranging from -35 to 160 F and extension and compression properties of plus/minus 40
percent of original gap.
- Joint Filler Materials
- Compressible Rod: Types as required for proper performance of the sealant in the
specific joint, as recommended by sealant manufacturer and as the following:
Soft bi-cellular polyethylene foam backer rod used in concrete construction. It is
comprised of both open and closed cells that will not out-gas when skin is ruptured and
prevents sealant bubbling and failure. Select shape and size of joint filler in consultation
with the manufacturer for proper performance in the specific condition of use in each
case.

1.8 Masonry Toilet Partition
The partition shall be constructed of masonry partitions raised 10cm above the finish floor
level and build on reinforced concrete saddle in same width of wall and 20cm depth unless
otherwise specified on drawings.
The walls shall be finished with ceramic tiles conforming to the requirements stated in item
12. Walls Tiling and as indicated on drawings and approved sample
