OPTHALMIC RANGE

The eye is an active organ that constantly adjusts the amount of

light it lets in and focuses on objects near and far. It produces
continuous images that are quickly relayed to the brain.

● The white of the eye is called the sclera

● It is covered by a thin membrane, called the conjunctiva
● The cornea is a clear dome on the front surface of the eye
that lets light in.
● The iris is the circular, colored area of the eye.
● The pupil is the black area in the middle of the eye.
● The lens, which sits behind the iris, changes its shape to
focus light onto the retina.
● The retina contains the cells that sense light
(photoreceptors).
● Each photoreceptor is attached to a nerve fiber. All the
nerve fibers are bundled together to form the optic nerve.
● The photoreceptors in the retina convert the image into
electrical impulses, which are carried to the brain by the optic
nerve.
● Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye): Inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear tissue covering the
white part of the eye and lining the eyelids. It can be caused by allergies, infections (bacterial
or viral), or irritants.
● Cataracts: Clouding of the eye's lens, which can lead to vision loss.
● Glaucoma: Increased pressure inside the eye, potentially leading to blindness.
● Dry Eye (Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca): Insufficient tear production, causing dryness and
inflammation.
● Corneal Ulcers: Wounds or breaks in the cornea, the clear front part of the eye.
● Cherry Eye: Prolapse of the third eyelid tear gland, causing a red, swollen appearance.
● Entropion: Inward turning of the eyelid, causing eyelashes to rub against the cornea.
● Eyelid Masses: Tumors or other growths on the eyelids.
