Mental Health

Our mental health affects how we feel, think, behave or relate to others.
When we are happy, we may smile more and be more talkative than when
we are feeling depressed or stressed. Mental illness is very common and
about half of us will be affected by the illness at some point in our lives. The
most common mental illnesses are anxiety, depression and substance abuse.
The World Health Organisation defines mental health as ‘a state of
well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can
cope with the normal stress of life, work productively and fruitfully, and is
able to make a contribution to his or her community’. Mental health is all
about being well, about what is going well in our lives and being happy.
When we have a positive frame of mind, feeling well and stress free,
we are productive and happier. We are able to interact better will face stress
or tough situations in our lives from time to time. Having good mental health
will help us tackle and overcome these problems or tough situations. Just as
there are ways to good physical health, there are also ways we can achieve
good mental health.
We should spend some time in nature. Take regular walks in a quiet
park or by the beach or somewhere similar. When we make time to go
outdoors, we will start to feel better and happier. We should also spend time
doing something that we like and that will help us relax. We may listen to
music, play a musical instrument or read a book to de-stress. We are also
encouraged to get small goals, complete them and revel in the sense of
accomplishment they bring. Personally, I get a great deal of satisfaction from
making a list of things to do and crossing out the items that have been
completed.
If we do our part to spread awareness of having good mental health,
we will be happier and more positive and so will our families and
communities.
