PHYSICS
Motion in a Straight Line
Class: XI
Name: ____________________________ Roll no: ________ Date: ___________________Assignment: 02

I. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). Choose the correct option.

1. A body is moving with uniform velocity then acceleration will be_____________.
a) zero b) positive c) negative d) Displacement is zero
2. A car starts from rest and attains a speed of 20 m/s in 4 seconds. The acceleration of the car is:
a) 2 m/s² b) 4 m/s² c) 5 m/s² d) 10 m/s²
3. If the displacement of an object is zero, the distance:
a) Must be zero b) Can’t be zero c) May or may not be zero d) Is negative
4. Which of the following graphs represents motion with uniform acceleration?
a) A straight line in displacement-time graph b) A curved line in velocity-time graph
c) A straight line in velocity-time graph d) A horizontal line in displacement-time graph
For question 7 to 9, two statements are given – One labelled as Assertion (A) and the other labelled as
Reason (R). Select the correct answer to these questions from the code (a), (b), (c), and (d) as given below:
a) Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A.
b) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A.
c) A is true, but R is false.
d) A is false, but R is true.
5. Assertion (A): A body moving with uniform velocity has zero acceleration.
Reason (R): Velocity remains constant only when there is no net force acting on the body.
6. Assertion (A): A body thrown vertically upwards returns to the ground with the same speed.
Reason (R): Acceleration due to gravity is constant throughout the motion.
II. Numerical Problems (3 marks each)
1. A body starts from rest and accelerates uniformly at 3 m/s². Find the velocity and displacement after 5
seconds.
2. A car moving with a speed of 72 km/h is brought to rest in 10 seconds. Calculate the retardation and the
distance it travels before stopping.
3. A stone is dropped from a height of 80 m. How long will it take to reach the ground? (Take g = 9.8 m/s²)
4. A body is moving with an initial velocity of 5 m/s and an acceleration of 2 m/s². How much distance will it
cover in 6 seconds?
5. Find the velocity and acceleration function if displacement function is given by x (t )=5 t 3−6 t 2+ 2t−9.
Also find the velocity and acceleration at t=1 sec.
6. Find the velocity and displacement function if acceleration function is given by a ( t )=4 t+ 2. Given c 1=5
and c 2=2.
7. Displacement time graph of a car is given in the diagram. Using it
find the velocity of object for different segments given below.
a) AB.
b) BC.
c) CD
d) DE
e) EF
