STEAM Education: Egypt Grand Challenges
Egypt Grand Challenge: Finding sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions to the
problem of climate change, coping with it, and avoiding exposure to the risks that occur because
of it.
Big Idea:
“Egypt is highly vulnerable to climate change, with a projected increase in heat waves, dust
storms, storms along the Mediterranean coast and extreme weather events. Stronger warming
has been documented over the past 30 years, with average annual temperatures increasing by
0.53 degree Celsius per decade. The country’s climate risks are and will impact the younger
generations of today.”
“Climate change is not only about managing risks but also about capturing new opportunities –
and catalyzing the private sector to engage broadly. Markets around the world are changing
quickly, favoring lower carbon goods and moving towards greener and more resilient
development paths. Enabling the transition toward a low carbon climate-resilient economy will
require actions to support an increased role of the private sector.”
“Climate Change is the defining issue of our time and we are at a defining moment. From
shifting weather patterns that threaten food production, to rising sea levels that increase the
risk of catastrophic flooding, the impacts of climate change are global in scope and
unprecedented in scale. Without drastic action today, adapting to these impacts in the future
will be more difficult and costly.”
The Human Fingerprint on Greenhouse Gases
“Greenhouse gases occur naturally and are essential to the survival of humans and millions of
other living things, by keeping some of the sun’s warmth from reflecting back into space and
making Earth livable. But after more than a century and a half of industrialization,
deforestation, and large scale agriculture, quantities of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere
have risen to record levels not seen in three million years. As populations, economies and
standards of living grow, so does the cumulative level of greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions.”
Essential Question:
How can Egypt find sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions to the problem of
climate change and cope with it and not be exposed to the risks that may occur because of it?
Design Challenge:
One of the Egyptian Grand Challenges is to Finding sustainable solutions to cope with
the problem of climate change and making it less impact on life in Egypt, and reducing
greenhouse gases because it is one of the most dangerous problems that affect Egypt and the
Egyptian climate as a whole and has a significant negative impact on humans and living
organisms in general, as It negatively affects the ozone layer, which affects the Earth's
temperature, so solutions must be found for this problem and its causes.
Your science and math studies in that part and do not forget to paraphrase any
information typed in your portfolio (empower your writing skills).
You are then asked to choose the appropriate design for your prototype, sketch it,
print it and choose the tools and equipment needed for your design to be able to
start working on it.
Your design requirements can be chosen from (but not limited to) the following topics:
(1) Search for the causes of climate change in Egypt and work to reduce them and find
solutions to reduce this problem.
(2) Search for solutions to the same problem after its occurrence to limit its spread and find
solutions to coexist with it without causing harm to all living organisms that deal with this
problem.
Identify a testable design requirement for your system that connects to a learning outcome.
You will design a way to test, measure and record data about your output for the design
requirement you choose.
Suggestions for the thinking scope.
A. Systems to reduce the causes of climate change.
Students can do a complete research on the causes of climate change in Egypt. When they do
this research, they will find that factories, companies, and cars are the main cause of this
problem because of the harmful and polluting gases that are emitted when cars burn fuel and
when they These factories and companies produce their products, which causes the production
of secondary waste and harmful gases in large quantities that harm the environment. Students
can work on designing filters that are placed on the exhaust outlets in these cars and factories,
which reduces the production of these harmful substances and reduces the proportion of
Climate change caused by these exhausts.
B. Platforms and games for children and adults to raise awareness.
Students can work on creating systems, games for children, and platforms to raise awareness
about climate change and its seriousness, and how we can coexist with it and start with
ourselves to reduce its causes.
C. Units to treat the air and make it clean and free from harmful substances.
Work on projects to solve the problem after it occurs and reduce it. Students can work on
making units that are placed in the streets. They pull the air and filter it by removing harmful
gases from it and releasing it back into the air while it is clean, which causes a reduction in
harmful gases that cause this is the problem.
