SINUSITIS
Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses, which are air-filled cavities in the
skull. The etiology can be infectious (bacterial, viral, or fungal) or
noninfectious (allergic) triggers. Or
Sinusitis is an inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses.
Healthy sinuses are filled with air. But when they become blocked and filled
with fluid, germs can grow and cause an infection.
This inflammation leads to block the normal sinus drainage pathways (sinus
ostia), which in turn leads to mucus retention, hypoxia (deficiency in the
amount of oxygen reaching the tissues), decreased mucociliary clearance,
and predisposition to bacterial growth
SINUSITIS
SINUSES
(paranasal sinuses - maxillary, frontal, ethmoidal and sphenoidal sinuses).
SINUSITIS
TYPES OF SINUSITIS:
Acute sinusitis, defined as symptoms of less than 4 weeks’
duration, usually starts with cold like symptoms such as a runny,
stuffy nose and facial pain
Subacute sinusitis, defined as symptoms of 4 to 8 weeks’ duration;
(inflammation)
Chronic sinusitis, defined as symptoms lasting longer than 8 weeks,
Recurrent acute sinusitis often defined as three or more episodes
per year, with each episode lasting less than 2 weeks.
PREVALENCE
The incidence of acute sinusitis ranges from 15 to 40 episodes per 1000
patients per year. (Graham Worrall, 2011)
An estimated 134 million Indians suffer from chronic sinusitis. One in eight
Indians suffer from chronic sinusitis and is more widespread than diabetes,
asthma or coronary heart disease.
(Times of India 2012)

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS cont.…
CAUSES OF SINUSITIS
CAUSES / TRIGGER FACTORS
Nasal polyps. These tissue growths may block the nasal passages or sinuses.
Allergic reactions. Allergic triggers include fungal infection of the sinuses.
Deviated nasal septum. A crooked septum — the wall between the nostrils — may
restrict or block sinus passages.
Trauma to the face. A fractured or broken facial bone may cause obstruction of the
sinus passages.
Respiratory tract infections. Infections in your respiratory tract — most commonly,
colds — can inflame and thicken your sinus membranes, block mucus drainage and
create conditions ripe for growth of bacteria. These infections can be viral, bacterial
or fungal in nature.
Allergies such as hay fever. Inflammation that occurs with allergies may block your
sinuses.
COMPLICATIONS
Asthma flare-ups. Chronic sinusitis can trigger an asthma attack.
Meningitis. This infection causes inflammation of the membranes and fluid
surrounding your brain and spinal cord.
Vision problems. If infection spreads to your eye socket, it can cause reduced
vision or even blindness that can be permanent.
Aneurysms or blood clots. Infection can cause problems in the veins surrounding
the sinuses, interfering with blood supply to your brain and putting you at risk of
a stroke.
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY cont.…..
YOGIC MANAGMENT
SHATKRIYAS
Jalaneti&Kapalabhati (not too much forceful exhale) –improves mucociliary
clearance, thinning the mucus and may decrease inflammation.
Kunjal – to increase the function of digestive system
OM CHANTING & PRAYER
Induce Nitric Oxide (NO) production leads to enhance local defense
mechanism in sinus
To prepare the mind & body for practice.
YOGIC MANAGEMENT contd..
SURYANAMASKAR
Practice in slow & with breath awareness .
It enhances the flexibility & soothing effect to musculo skeletal system..
ASANA
Tadasana,urdhvahastottanasana,paschimottanasana,gomukhasana,
mandukasana, simhasana,bhujangasana, matsyasana, &savasana.
To enhance blood flow to face region.
YOGIC MANAGEMENT contd..
PRANAYAMA:
Nadishodhana pranayama, suryanadi pranayama, bhramari.
To balance the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), soothe the lining of the
sinus region& prevents the hypersensitivity to external stimuli (allergens).
To open the blocks in sinus ostia (to connect sinus and nasal cavity) &
enhance excess mucus drain from sinus
MEDITATION & RELAATION TECHNIQUES
Antarmouna / Ajapa japa praMctices/ Cyclic Meditation/Om Meditation
To facilitate mind & body become calm & relax.
To enhance the Immune system.
DIET:
Avoid allergic foods like cold foods, banana, milk & milk products.
Avoid spicy oily & kapha aggravating foods.
