I. EXPLANATION AND SCRIPTURAL BASIS

A. Effective Calling
1. Differences between the gospel call (general) and effective call (to some
people):

Definition: Effective Calling is an act of God the Father, speaking through the
human proclamation of the gospel, in which He summons people to Himself in
such a way that they respond in saving faith.

Definition: Gospel Call is the general gospel invitation to all people that comes
through human proclamation of the gospel. Also referred to as “external calling.”

Gospel Call Effective Call

• Man’s Action • God’s action
• Offered to all people • Particular
• External • Internal
• Often rejected • Always Effective

Romans 8:30
and those whom He predestined, He also called; and those whom He called, He also justified; and
those whom He justified, He also glorified.

1 Peter 2:9
But you are a chosen family, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession,
so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His
marvelous light;

1 Corinthians 1:9
God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 Thessalonians 2:12
so that you would walk in a manner worthy of the God who calls you into His own kingdom and
glory.

1 Peter 5:10
And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory
in Christ, will Himself restore, strengthen, confirm, and ground you.

Romans 1:7
to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our
Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

2. Both Calls Are Scriptural and Necessary for Salvation

John 6:44
No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last
day.

Acts 16:14
And a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple fabrics, a worshiper of God, was
listening, whose heart the Lord opened to pay attention to the things spoken by Paul.

Romans 10:14
How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they
have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?

B. The Elements of The Gospel Call

1. Explanation of the Facts Concerning Salvation
a) All people have sinned
Romans 3:23
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

b) The penalty for sin is death

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
Lord.

c) Jesus Christ died to pay the penalty for our sins

Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ
died for us.

2. Invitation to Respond to Christ Personally in Repentance and Faith

Matthew 11:28
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.

John 1:11-12
He came to what was His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many
as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in
His name,

Revelation 3:20; 22:17

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in
to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.

Revelation 22:17
And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one
who is thirsty come. Let the one who wishes receive the water of life without cost.

a) Repentance is necessary for salvation

Luke 24:47
and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the
nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

Acts 20:21
solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks about repentance toward God and faith in our
Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 2:4
Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and forbearance and patience, not
knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?

2 Corinthians 7:10
For godly sorrow produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow
of the world brings about death

b) Faith is necessary for salvation

Acts 16:31
And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your house.”

Ephesians 2:8
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of
God;

3. A Promise of Forgiveness and Eternal Life

John 3:16; 6:37
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him
shall not perish, but have eternal life… All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one
who comes to Me I will never cast out.

Acts 3:19
Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing
may come from the presence of the Lord;

C. The Importance of the Gospel Call

Romans 10:14
How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they
have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?

IV. HYMN
“I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say”
I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto me and rest;
Lay down, thou weary one, lay down thy head upon my breast.”
I came to Jesus as I was, weary and worn and sad,
I found in him a resting place, and he has made me glad.
I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Behold, I freely give
The living water; thirsty one, stoop down and drink, and live.”
I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life-giving stream;
My thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him.
I heard the voice of Jesus say, “I am this dark world’s light;
Look unto me, thy morn shall rise, and all thy day be bright.”
I looked to Jesus, and I found in him my star, my sun;
And in that light of life I’ll walk, till trav’lling days are done.

CONTEMPORARY WORSHIP SONG

“I Bow Down”
I bow down before You, Lord.
I bow down before You, Lord.
Holy and faithful, righteous and true,
You are my King.
You are Jesus; You’re my Savior,
And with all that is within me,
I bow(kneel) down before You.
I kneel down before You, Lord.
I kneel down before You, Lord.
Redeemer and Healer, Almighty God,
You are my King.

Romans Road to Salvation

We are all sinners by nature and by choice
Romans 3:23
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

We receive eternal life as a free gift!

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

God demonstrated His love for us, His enemies.

Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

We must trust and surrender to Jesus as Lord.

Romans 10:9-10
that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be
saved; for with the heart a person believes, leading to righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, leading to salvation.

Our assurance of salvation through Jesus

Romans 10:13
for “Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
