Quantitative Adjectives

Quantitative adjectives tell us how much of a thing we are talking about

E.g. Winning the first prize gave him much pleasure.
Can you lend me some money?

When a quantitative adjective tells us how many persons or things we are

talking about, we can also call it a numeral adjective or simply, a numeral

The two main kind of numerals are:

a) Definite Numeral Adjectives

Such an adjective mentions an exact or definite number.
There are three kinds of definite numeral adjectives

 When the adjective is a definite number it is known as a cardinal.

Eg. There are forty apartments in this building
I bought two dresses on my birthday

 When an adjective describes the exact position or rank of a person or

thing in a group or series, it is known as an ordinal.
E.g. I won the first prize in the elocution competition
The third house on the left is mine.

 When an adjective refers to a number less than one, it is known as a

fraction.
E.g. He completed half the assignment on Saturday.
She ate one-third of the cake by herself.

b) Indefinite Numeral Adjectives

Such adjectives tell us how many persons or things we are talking about
without mentioning a definite number
E. g. Many people visit the Taj Mahal every year.
There are some people waiting in the queue.

Note: An ordinary quantitative adjective mentions a quantity and answers

the question how much? An indefinite numeral adjective does not mention
an exact number and answers the question how many?
