CHARACTERISTICS OF FUEL

What are the characteristics of an ideal fuel?

1. It should possess high calorific value.
2. It should have proper ignition temperature. The
ignition temperature of the fuel should neither
be too low nor too high.
3. It should not produce poisonous products during
combustion. In other words, it should not cause
pollution o combustion.
4. It should have moderate rate of combustion.

CALORIFIC VALUE-
Calorific value is the amount of heat energy
present in food or fuel and which is determined
by complete combustion of specified quantity at
constant pressure and in normal conditions.

COMBUSTION-
: an act or instance of burning Smoke is produced
during combustion.
: a usually rapid chemical process (such as oxidation) that
produces heat and usually light.
IGNITION TEMPERATURE
The lowest temperature at which a combustible substance
when heated (as in a bath of molten metal) takes fire in air
and continues to burn —

Fuels

Most of the substances used for burning are fuels.

Substances that produce heat and light energy on
burning are called fuels. Some commonly used fuels are
wood, coal, cow dung cakes, kerosene, LPG, petrol, and
diesel. We use fuels for cooking, heating, in
automobiles, and for the generation of electricity. Based
on their physical state, fuels can be classified as solid,
liquid, or gaseous.
