1.
Introduction
Speed humps are among the measures deployed to enforce speed limit controls along the
different sections of the Road. It is henceforth critical to have a well-constructed speed hump that
can withstand the traffic traversing the Road throughout the service life of the Road. In the
original Contract, Asphalt was recommended as the material for the construction of speed
humps. During design review a comparison was made between Asphalt and Reinforced Concrete
as material for the Construction of Speed humps.
2. Comparison of Design Elements
Asphalt Concrete Speed
Feature Reinforced Concrete Speed Humps
Humps
Material Made from asphalt mixed with Constructed using concrete reinforced
Composition aggregate with steel bars or mesh
Flexibility & More flexible, adjusts to road
Rigid, maintains shape over time
Adaptability conditions
Quick to install, requires heating
Installation Process Longer installation time due to curing
and compaction
Smoother finish, reducing tire
Surface Texture Can be rougher, improving traction
wear
3. Durability & Maintenance
Asphalt Concrete Humps deteriorate faster under extreme weather conditions and heavy
traffic loads, requiring periodic resurfacing. They are more susceptible to rutting and
cracking.
Reinforced Concrete Humps are highly durable, resistant to weather and traffic stress,
but may develop surface cracks that require sealing.
4. Cost Considerations
Initial Cost: Asphalt concrete is generally more affordable due to lower material and
labor costs.
Long-Term Cost: Reinforced concrete, though more expensive initially, requires less
frequent maintenance, making it cost-effective over time.
The Cost comparison between Concrete and Asphalt Speed Humps can be seen on the Table
below;
Cost of Concrete Speed Humps

Total Construction Cost 1,742,744,367.88
Cost of Asphalt Speed Humps

41.01 (a) Prime Coat: MC-30 Cut-Back bitumen 4,408.00 4,500.00 19,836,000.00
41.03 Aggregate for Binding 15.43 95,000.00 1,465,660.00
42.01(a) Asphalt Concrete Surfacing 760.71 540,000.00 410,782,320.00
Total Construction Cost 432,083,980.00
5. Effectiveness in Traffic Control
Asphalt speed humps provide smoother transitions, causing less discomfort for drivers
and passengers.
Reinforced concrete humps create a firmer obstruction, ensuring stronger speed
reduction.
6. Conclusion
Choosing between asphalt and reinforced concrete speed humps depends on budget, climate,
traffic volume, and long-term maintenance plans. Asphalt humps work well in areas
requiring flexibility and rapid installation, while reinforced concrete humps offer greater
durability and long-term performance.
The consultant is therefore seeking approval from the Employer to change the material for speed
humps from Asphalt to Reinforced Cement Concrete.
