Cab Suspension, Front, Function

The document outlines various cab suspension options provided by Scania, including Mechanical Basic, Mechanical HD, Air and Mechanical HD, and Air Comfort, each designed to enhance driver comfort under different conditions. Mechanical Basic offers adequate comfort with manual adjustments, while Mechanical HD provides better damping for uneven roads. Air Comfort features automatic level adjustment for optimal comfort regardless of load, though extreme temperatures may affect the air bellows' lifespan.

18-60 Cab suspension, front

Function - Cab suspension
Cab suspension is important for the working environment in the cab and greatly affects
driver comfort. The cab suspension has a suspension travel of approx. 100 mm. Normal
cab level is in the centre of this range, i.e. at 50 mm. The cab level must be kept around
50 mm to have maximum suspension travel available in both directions. At approx.
35 mm and 65 mm, the cab comes into contact with the impact rubber which is there to
mitigate impacts. Contact with the impact rubber impairs comfort. Scania supplies 3
different performance levels to provide comfort based on customer's different needs. 2
versions with mechanical suspension and one version with air suspension. Crew cabs have
a combination of mechanical suspension and air suspension.

Function - Mechanical basic

Mechanical basic provides adequate comfort on smooth and uneven roads. The
suspension is 4-point sprung with coil springs and integrated shock absorbers. Mechanical
basic means that the cab will drop with increasing load (the factory setting is approx.
60 mm unladen). To compensate for different loads, the cab level can be adjusted
manually by tensioning the springs. This is done by turning the spring seat (in 5 stages)
using a tool. In order to do this, the springs must be relieved, which means that the cab
needs to be lifted with an overhead hoist.
Mechanical basic has less damping than Mechanical HD, which means that when driving
on very uneven roads and off-road the risk of bumps increases and these seem more
substantial than when driving with Mechanical HD. When driving on very uneven roads
and off-road, the cab damping is less noticeable. In the event of greater irregularities in
the road, run-out is experienced laterally and longitudinally with Mechanical Basic.

Function - Mechanical HD
This suspension is a robust performance level for demanding driving conditions. The
suspension is 4-point sprung with coil springs and integrated shock absorbers. On
mechanical HD, the cab drops with increasing load (the factory setting is approx. 60 mm
unladen). To compensate for different loads, the cab level can be adjusted manually by
tensioning the springs. This is done by turning the spring seat (in 5 stages) using a tool. In
order to do this, the springs must be relieved, which means that the cab needs to be lifted
with an overhead hoist. Shock absorber setting and roll stiffness differ from Mechanical
Basic.
Mechanical HD has more damping than other performance levels, which means that when
driving on very uneven roads and off-road the risk of bumps is reduced. Any bumps
experienced feel smoother than when driving with Mechanical Basic. The anti-roll bar for
Mechanical HD has less roll stiffness than other performance levels. This means that
when driving on very uneven roads and off-road the cab has better damping with more
lateral control than other performance levels. When driving with mechanical HD
suspension on a smooth road, the cab roll will be more static, e.g. when cornering for a
long time.

Function - Air and mechanical HD

This suspension has 2 air bellows with integrated rear shock absorber and front
mechanical suspension. The cab level is adjusted manually. With air suspension, the cab
level in the rear part of the cab can be kept unchanged regardless of whether the cab is
loaded or not. The suspension option is only intended for crew cabs.

Function - Air comfort

This performance level has full air suspension and provides optimum comfort on smooth
and uneven roads. With Air comfort, there are 2 valves (one at the front and one rear)
which control the level adjustment automatically. In this way, the cab level is always
approx. 50 mm, regardless of the load in the cab. The shock absorbers have a comfort
zone with lower damping when the shock absorbers are in normal drive mode. The
comfort zone minimises vibrations which occur in the event of small road imperfections.
Progressive damping can withstand more substantial road imperfections, such as railway
crossings, and still retain comfort.
When driving in extremely cold or hot conditions, Air comfort will reduce the service life
of the air bellows.
