POPULATION OF PUNJAB (CENSUS 2011)


• The first systematic census was conducted all over India in 1872. ( Non Synchronous).
• First synchronous census was conducted in 1881.

Census 2011
• According to 2011 census, the total Population of Punjab is 2,77,43,338. This is 2.30% of the total
population of India and Punjab is at 16th rank amongst all 28 states of India.
• The decadal change i.e. increase in population from 2001 to 2011 is 13.89%. The decadal growth rate is
lowest since 1961.
• The population of Punjab in 2001 was 2,43,58,999. As per estimates, the population of Punjab in 2021 is
3.18 crore.
• Urban & Rural Population: In Punjab, majority of people live in rural areas. In terms of percentage
of population, urban population constitutes only 37.49% whereas rural population is 62.51% of the total
population.
• The Literacy Rate: The literacy rate in Punjab is 75.84% which is better than the national average of
73.0%.
• The male literacy rate is 80.4% and female literacy rate is 70.7%. The male literacy rate is slightly less than
national average of 80.9%.
• Density: Punjab is one of the densely populated states of India. The population density is 551, which
is higher as compared to all India average of 382.
• Amongst all the districts of Punjab, Ludhiana has the highest population density of 978, followed by
Amritsar with population density of 928.
• Sex Ratio: Sex ratio is measured as number of females per 1000 males and the sex ratio in Punjab is 895.
• The figures are better in rural area than the urban area, having a value of 907 in rural population and 875
in urban population.
• The corresponding figures in 2001 were - 876 (Total), 890 (Rural), 849 (Urban).
• Sex ratio in Punjab in the age group of 0 to 6 years is just 846, which will create a serious social problem
in the coming times.
• The value is 844 is the rural folks and 852 in the urban people.
• Hoshiarpur district has the highest sex ratio of 961 and district Bathinda has the lowest sex ratio in
Punjab where it is just 868.

Demographic Profile
• The majority of population of Punjab belong to Sikh religion.
• The percentage of Sikh population in Punjab is 57.69% of the total population of the state.
• The next major religion in Punjab is Hindu religion, which is followed by the 38.49% of the total
population.
• The Sikh and Hindu community forms more than 96% of the total population of state.
• The total Muslim population in Punjab is around 5.35 lakh and the ratio of Muslims in the state is only
1.93%.
• It is interesting to note that the Muslims are in majority in the Malerkotla town, where this religious group
constitute around 69% of the total persons in the town.

• Scheduled Caste Population in Punjab


• The proportion of scheduled caste population is highest in Punjab. SC population in Punjab is 88.6
lakh, which is 31.9% of the total population of state.
• At the all India level, this proportion is 16.6%. The percentage of scheduled castes is 22.7 in urban areas
and 37.5 in rural areas.

ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISIONS OF PUNJAB


• A Division is a cluster of districts, created for the purpose of civil administration. At present, there are total
5 division of Punjab namely
• Jalandhar
• Patiala
• Ropar
• Faridkot
• Firozpur.
• The administrative head of a division is called as Divisional Commissioner or simply Commissioner. An

officer from the Indian Administrative Services (IAS) is appointed as the commissioner of a division.
• The Faridkot Division of Punjab was established in 1996.
• The Rupnagar district was formed as an Independent Sessions Division on August 1, 1972
• On 15 August 1973, Ferozepur Division was formed.

1. Faridkot: Faridkot has 3 districts under it and names of these districts are Faridkot, Bathinda and
Mansa.
2. Firozpur: Firozpur division has 4 districts. These districts are - Firozpur, Moga, Shri Muktsar Sahib and
Fazilka.
3. Jalandhar: There are total 7 districts in this division. The names of these districts are - Jalandhar,
Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur.
4. Patiala: There are 6 districts under this division. Ludhiana, the largest district of Punjab is also in
Patiala division. The other districts are - Patiala, Sangrur, Barnala, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ludhiana and
Malerkotla.
5. Ropar: The Ropar (or Rupnagar) division has 3 districts in it - Ropar (Rupnagar), Ajitgarh (Mohali) and
Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr).

Malerkotla District
• Malerkotla district was carved out of Sangrur as the 23rd district of Punjab on 02 June, 2021.
• District Malerkotla is divided into three subdivisions Malerkotla, Amargarh and Ahmedgarh. Malerkotla
district has a population of 429,754 as per the 2011 census report.
• The density of population in Malerkotla is 837 persons per square kilometer.
• Malerkotla is one of the five districts in Patiala Division. The district takes its name from the princely state
of Malerkotla that existed under the British Raj.
• It was later on merged with other nearby princely states to create the Patiala and East Punjab States Union
(PEPSU). Subsequently it became a Tehsil of Sangrur District when PEPSU was merged with Punjab.
• It is bounded by Ludhiana district in the north, by Barnala district in the west, by Patiala district in the east
and by Sangrur district in the south.
• The headquarters of the District is located at Malerkotla City.
• The city is situated on NH 11 and on secondary Ludhiana-Delhi railway line.
• Malerkotla is famous for its poets and monuments. It is a major supplier of vegetables to this part of Punjab.
• It is also known for its metal industry and also for the manufacture of agricultural machinery.

Smallest district of Punjab


• Pathankot, with a total area of 929 sq. km., is the smallest district of Punjab in terms of area. Some
sources say Mohali (SAS Nagar) as the smallest district of Punjab, which is no longer correct answer. The
total area of Mohali district is 1093 sq. km., which is higher than the area of Pathankot district.
• If we consider the total population of a district, then Barnala is the smallest district of Punjab. The
total population of Barnala district is 5.96 lakh (census 2011) and this is lower than any other district of
Punjab.

Largest district of Punjab


• Ludhiana is the largest district of Punjab both by area and population. The area of Ludhiana district
is 3767 sq. km. and its total population according to census 2011 is almost 35 lakh.

Border Districts:
• There are six border districts in Punjab which share the boundary with Pakistan. These districts are
• Pathankot
• Gurdaspur
• Amritsar
• Tarn Taran
• Firozpur
• Fazilka.
• Hoshiarpur district has the highest literacy rate. The literacy rate in Hoshiarpur district is 84.6%.

• There were 11 districts in Punjab after the Reorganization of Punjab in 1966. These districts were -
Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Firozpur, Gurdaspur, Patiala, Kapurthala, Bathinda, Ropar,
Sangrur.

Punjab Vidhan Sabha Seats


• Punjab Vidhan Sabha (Punjab Legislative Assembly, Punjab Assembly) consists of 117 members and these
members are elected for five years.
• The legislative assembly meets at Vidhan Bhavan, Sector 1, Chandigarh.
• It means that the total seats in Punjab or Punjab Vidhan Sabha seats is one hundred seventeen. To gain
majority in the Punjab Assembly, a party needs support of 59 MLAs.

Lok Sabha Seats in Punjab


• There are total 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab and elected representative from each seat is called as MP or
Member of Parliament.
• In Punjab, each Lok Sabha constituency has 9 assembly constituencies (Vidhan Sabha seats) in it and
there are total 117 seats in Punjab Vidhan Sabha.
• The general elections in India for Lok Sabha seats are held after every 5 years and last elections were held
in 2019.

• Rajya Sabha' (Council of States) is the Upper House of the Parliament of India. There are total 7 Rajya
Sabha seats in Punjab.

• As per the latest data available with us, there are total 93 tehsils & 81 sub-tehsils in Punjab in 2021.
• The districts with highest number of tehsils are Ludhiana and Sangrur, both having 7 tehsils each. District
Barnala and Pathankot have lowest number of tehsils, with each having 2 tehsils.

Total Blocks
• The total number of rural development blocks or BDPO in Punjab is 150. The latest changes in the list of
blocks is shifting of some blocks of Sangrur district to the new district Malerkotla which was formed in
2021.

• Gulab Chand Kataria is an Indian politician who is serving as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator
of Chandigarh since 31 July 2024. He was a minister in the Government of Rajasthan from 2013 till 2018,
2003 to 2008 and from 1993 to 1998.
