READING & WRITING

SECTION A
PREFACE
A purposeful and structured unit of inquiry based on ‘Reading & Writing’ will enable our learners
to communicate and share their unique perspective with others. Reading and writing are not just
fundamental skills; they are keys that unlock endless possibilities. Reading exposes children to a
wide range of vocabulary and sentence structures, helping them develop language skills. Writing
facilitates the thinking processes, provides guidance as learners understand and practice the
process, and allows them to express ideas using examples, literary devices, and creativity .The
designed curriculum will help our learners to express themselves creatively, understand the
processes to develop awareness of writing, gather knowledge about genres (including digital
genres) to adapt text towards purpose and to know how to use writing in their everyday lives.
Improving writing skills – grammatically and with good vocabulary – will help our learners
consistently get better at effective communication.
Reading and writing skills are related to language learning. The journey of language learning is an
ongoing process. The process already started in the previous booklet. This is in continuation with
the journey….

Parental Support
• Reading books are always the best source for reading prompts or for exposure
to different forms of writing. It helps expand children's vocabulary and shows
them different ways of using words. With younger children, make sure you are
reading together every day and encouraging their love of reading.
• Have your child write his/her own thank-you notes, party invitations and
letters to family.
• Let your child make the grocery list. Finding a pen pal for your child would
make writing “real.”

I. Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow.
In his childhood, Homi bubbled with immense energy, slept much
less than the children of his age. His father took him to many
doctors. They subjected him to several tests. They found nothing
wrong. He was a perfectly healthy child. Why did he spend less
time in sleep? It took them some time to understand the cause.
Homi had a super-active brain. It was ticking away merrily,
handling streams of new ideas and novel thoughts. (Para 1)
This news thrilled his parents. Now they knew they had no cause for anxiety and thought
they could shape his destiny by helping him develop his special talent. They stacked the
bookshelves at home with books on a wide range of subjects as well as introduced him to
great masters in the field of literature, books on nature, science, technology and fine arts.
The seed of quest for greatness was sown then. (Para 2)
This strategy of Homi’s parents paid rich rewards. By the age of fifteen, he was much
better informed than most boys of his age. He could understand complex ideas. Once he
took everyone by surprise when he talked at length about Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.
Homi proved that success is linked with hard work, total commitment to the job and a
‘never- say- die’ spirit. (Para-3)

My Birthday- A Memorable Day of My Life
Introduction
My tenth birthday is the most memorable day of my life. It is a day I can never forget and
I consider it to be the best birthday yet. The day started just like any other normal day.
However, as it kept progressing, a lot of exciting things began to happen.
Events –
1. I woke up very early on my birthday because I had to dress up in casual clothes
for school. The day before, all my candies were ready that I would distribute in the
classroom.
2. My mother prepared my favourite breakfast and gave me a big chocolate bar for lunch
as well. I went to school and the whole class sang for me and congratulated me. It was the
turn to distribute sweets.
3. My best friend and I went to all the teachers to distribute toffees and we had a great
time there. Moreover, it was an incredible feeling. My friends were all singing for me and
eager to come to my birthday party later in the evening.
Conclusion –
As I distributed the invites, I had goosebumps about the exciting party planned at home. I
wished I had wings to fly home and get ready for the party to follow.
I. My Birthday Party
The birthday at my school was memorable but the birthday party at my home made the day
even more memorable. Also, my mother invited all my friends from school and the colony to
the party.
