When Pride Disappears: Reflections on the Absence of Pride Celebrations
in North Africa and the Middle East

WhenPride month arrives, the LGBTQ+ community around the world gathers to celebrate
diversity, love, and solidarity. However, in North Africa and the Middle East, the joyous cele-
brations seem to vanish amidst the challenges and struggles faced by the queer community
The absence of Pride celebrations in these regions reflects numerous obstacles that the
LGBTQ+ communities encounter, rooted in legal, cultural, and social constraints. Traditional
societal norms and conservative values prevailing in North Africa and the Middle East pose
barriers to open expression of queer identity and the embodiment of LGBTQ+ pride.
It is important to note that in these regions, legal penalties for being LGBTQ+ range from im-
prisonment and fines to even capital punishment, leaving individuals living in constant fear
and threat. This reality forces many to hide their true selves and suppress their queer and
gender non-conforming identities, making public celebrations and raising the rainbow flag
in the Arab world a risky endeavor.
The Rainbow flag, symbolizing diversity, solidarity, and LGBTQ+ pride, may become a forbid-
den emblem in these regions. However, despite the restrictions and threats, its impact
cannot be denied. It represents hope, support, and resilience against the discrimination and
violence faced by the queer community.
During Pride month, we must remember and honor the victims who lost their lives due to vio-
lence and discrimination. We raise our voices in solidarity, affirming that every life within the
LGBTQ+ community is valuable and deserving of respect.
We celebrate the strength of those resilient souls who defied the odds and persisted in being
their authentic selves. We stand alongside the queer community, extending our hands in sup-
port, comfort, and congratulations for the month that symbolizes their resilience and stren-
gth
In the face of restrictions and discrimination, let us use our hearts and minds to build bridges
of understanding and love. Let us work together to bring about change, enhance equality,
and uphold the rights of the LGBTQ+ and queer communities in these regions. We must be
voices for those who suffer isolation and injustice, expressing our wishes for a better future
where they can live with freedom, dignity, and the equality they deserve.
