What is SAPI?

It is the Autonomous Service of Intellectual Property (SAPI), an organization


attached to the Ministry of Popular Power for Commerce, which exercises the
competence regarding intellectual property that corresponds to the State
Venezuelan, in the field of Copyright, Trademarks, and Patents.

Brief Historical Review of the SAPI


The SAPI was created by Decree No. 1,768 on March 25, 1997,
published in the Official Gazette No. 36,192 dated 04-24-97; enters into
operation on May 1, 1998 according to Ministerial Resolution No. 054 of
07-04-1998, published in Official Gazette No. 36,433 dated 15-04-98.
The creation of the SAPI has allowed for the unification under one organization the
Industrial Property and Copyright. This merger has made it possible
streamline and optimize the process of registration, protection, and dissemination of the
creations of the human intellect under the various schemes that operate
currently in the Venezuelan Intellectual Property System.

Organizational Structure
General Directorate, Directorate of Industrial Property Registration, Directorate
National Copyright Office, Legal Advisory Directorate, Directorate of
Administrative Support and Direction of Dissemination and Cooperation.

What does it deal with?

Everything related to the Intellectual Property Registry, which includes the


management of the concession of rights to inventors over their
creations, through invention patents, improvements, drawings, and designs
industrials; to merchants or individuals about the signs that
are used to distinguish their products and services in the market, through the
trademarks, trade names and slogans; the registration,

Objectives of the SAPI

Article 25
Copyright lasts for the whole life of the author and expires sixty years after their death.

Guidelines of the SAPI

Provide legal security through the protection of Property

dissemination of information on intellectual property, with the aim of
facilitate the technology transfer to the productive sectors and of
innovation.
Contribute to the protection and defense of collective intellectual property
of traditional knowledge, technologies, and innovations of the
indigenous peoples and local communities associated with use and conservation
of biological diversity.
Encourage intellectual creation by protecting copyright over the
works.
Cooperate and negotiate at the local, regional, and global levels, with the
States, organizations, and peoples, for protection and development
of intellectual property according to the fundamental principles of
the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
Strengthening the social economy with the instrument of brands
collective.
Coordinate the administration of national and international agreements
for the consolidation of the National Intellectual Property System and
subscription of new commitments.
Promote the Use of Free Technologies and Artistic Creations.
