A Few Suggestions For Teaching & Performance
Th creating this collection of duets, we wanted a
progressive collection that would work well with any of
the major recorder methods, including Recorder Karate.
‘There are eight duets, the frst abit easier than the
easiest Recorder Karate tune, and the most difficult no
more so than the hardest Recorder Karate tune.
Lots of ways to perform these duets -
Each duet ean be Fayed unaccompanied, wth a
playable piano accompaniment available online, ot with
the high quality accompaniment on the
Performance/Accompaniznent recordings inchded in
the kite
Short, Simple, and Suitchable - We have kept each
duet fairly short, so they can be a part of one class
session, We also did this so thae if you are testing fr
felts, they are as manageable as any tune in Recorder
Ravate or other methoes.
‘We recommend that you up the leaming quotient
by having students lear both parts in each duet, Most
are of similar technical difficulty, so when you come to
the repeat, your players can switch from part I to 2 or
vce versa,
Change tempos with MIDI practice files -
The simple accompaniments on these duets make them
‘good candidates to give you MIDI files so that you can
ftmport them into soleware that wl let you change
tempos for slower practice. This way you can Work Your
way up to the tempo ofthe recorded tracks
Both Mac and PC - There are a number of free or
inexpensive programs for Mae and PC. Finale NotePad®
is just $10 as a download (as of this writing), more if
on disk. MuseScore (http://musescore.org/) is a good.
free notation program that will import MIDI and let
you adjust the tempo. It only uses a single staff, but
you have the music already.
Free options for the Mac include GarageBand”
which comes with all recent Macs. It takes a little
earning to set up instruments, but not much. Another
good free option is Mighty MIDI
(hetp://xmidi.com/apps-hem|) Ie’ a simple, streamlined
player that looks like playing files in QuickTime”
player, with no notation shown.
Free for the PC: Anvil Studio
(http://www anvilstudio.comy) is sort of a free PC
equivalent to GarageBand?. In other words, it can play
MIDI, but it’s a little complicated, Allin all, we would,
recommend MuseScore over Anvil
You'll find these on our Links page under Resources
at MusicK8.com.
We put the DOJO in DOJO DUETS -
Many teachers love what we have done for Recorder
Karate. With this in mind, we designed a place where
their students can go to practice online. For this
collection, you have a special site that will allow your
students to practice these duets with streaming online
recordings like they currently can in our Recorder
Karate Dojo area. The site is:

because teachers are asking for a wider variety of belts,
we have added a number of two-color belts made of the
same colorful, high-quality embroidery thread as our
one-color belts. While you can. choose any rewards you
like, for your convenience, we have included a
suggested color plan for reward belts in the chart on
page 10. You can see them at MusicK8.com

Walk This Way
‘Our fist duet gives young players a real sense of
accomplishment even though it uses only A and B,
and never requires anything harder than quarter notes
While it is not exactly a call and response, it has the
feel of one. The easy, laid-back groove is not too fast,
but it is still best to play it first with just recorders.
‘And whether you use our excellent tracks or play it
with a keyboard only, consider adding small shakers on.
quarter or eighth notes
By The Koi Pond
This lovely duet is set against a lightly syncopated
set of acoustic treasures that make it sound more
involved even though the BAG melody for the
recorders is simple. It’s a beautiful song that your
players, especially the girls, will enjoy a lot.
‘Asan enrichment, discuss koi ponds. Have your
students seen them? Are there any nearby they might
visit with their parents? And listening to just the
tracks, discuss the instruments they hear (including
acoustic guitars, fretless bass, piano, and wind chimes).
White Tiger
ae
for players just learning C, and part two works well
swith groups where some of the players aren't quite
ready to go beyond BAG. While the song requires
both eighth notes and ties, itis fine to simplify i,
letting them play bar 12 the same as in bar 11,
Regardless what you use as accompaniment, you
could add your own cowbell or tambourine, cowbell
playing straight quarter notes, and tambourine playing
on beats two and four.
ZQué Pasa?
‘What's happenin’? The rhythmic Latin flavor
makes this an exciting way for your players to move
beyond BAG. The background tracks are especially
nice, featuring the super Spanish guitar performance
by Sandy Williams.
{As your students first play the E’s in this work,
they will find that they aren’t naturally as loud and
easy to produce as were thelr BAG notes, The
tendency may be to overblow to compensate for this,
so use this as a teachable moment.
The “housetop” accents at the end mean to play
the notes short and accented, Both concepts may be
beyond beginning players, so just start teaching
staccato (versus legato). When you are ready to add
the accent, again beware of overblowing.
Domo Arigato
A gentle, pentatonic round, this tune has an
acoustic, Japanese flavor that makes it an ideal
addition to your Recorder Karate regimen. (The title
means “Thank you" in Japanese.) As a round, the song
doesn’t change much for a player when they switch
ports, but there isa subtle difference between the
“leading” and “Yollowing” parts in a round.
sire ty tien etter
good to compare the pulse and feel of this Song wich a
similar one, say in 4/4, such as “By The Koi Pond.”
Go From My Window
William Byrd wrote one of the best known settings
of this popular Renaissance tune, and it works nicely
as a recorder duet. It provides a fine opportunity for
your students to play music from this period, one in,
{hich the tecorder was an important instrument
A Little Waltz
ore difficult than the previous waltz in the
collection, this song sounds more like a classic waltz,
one meant for dance. It includes an Fé for part two,
and each of the two parts is more independent than in
most of these duets. Note that the articulations are
eptional, and can be added as the players are ready:
Also note that since the recorders play almost
continuously in this piece, you will want to decide
where to breathe ahead of time and add breath marks.
Sleep Old Pup
Our technically most difficult piece was adapted
from an old folk song that has appeared with various
canine titles. If your students would like to rename it
after a favorite pup, we certainly encourage it.
While it doesn’t jump around much, it does use a
full octave from D to D', and part two calls for Fe.
This is definitely one co stare with just recorders or
with a MIDI track at a slower tempo. If you prefer to
do this with just a live keyboard, consider also adding
a small shaker playing eighth notes.
