following pages.
Each Cooper Wiring Devices switch is tested at the point of manufacture and re-tested for
electrical and mechanical performance as well as dielectric safety before it is packed.
Our switches meet (and in nearly all instances, exceed) all of the latest test requirements of
Underwriters’ Laboratories (UL), Canadian Standards Association (CSA), National Electrical
Manufacturers Association (NEMA) and the U.S. General Services Administration’s (GSA)
Federal Specifications as noted throughout this section.
Industrial Specification Grade Switches
Cooper’s Industrial Specification Grade switches incorporate the most durable design elements
INDUSTRIAL in the industry. This complete line features superior engineering and performance as well as
COMMERCIAL outstanding appearance and ease of installation. Made to provide the safest, most dependable
wiring device performance available, Industrial Specification Grade toggle switches are horsepower
RESIDENTIAL rated for motor loads and are also available in standard key, Corbin key lock, tap-action and
several lighted/pilot-lighted versions for any number of other heavy-duty special applications.
Commercial Specification Grade Switches
Cooper’s Commercial Specification Grade switches are designed to fill the need for high quality,

Standard Grade Switches
Cooper Wiring Devices’ Standard Grade switches are the industry’s finest toggle switches for use
in residential and light commercial applications. Unique features such as longer, wider mounting
straps, built-in wire strippers and wire looping aids make these switches fast and easy to install.
Specialty Switches
Cooper Wiring Devices’ specialty switches offer a broad range of special applications for new or
replacement needs. The line includes CO/ALR switches for use on aluminum wiring, snap-in
appliance switches and canopy switches.
Cooper Wiring Devices’ switches are Underwriters’ Laboratories (UL) Listed (except where noted).
Many are also CSA certified or available as CSA certified. Please consult Cooper Wiring Devices

 Switch Applications
The maximum permitted load for which a switch is suitable depends on the switch rating and
the nature of the load. Proper selection of switches is determined by test standards and
requirements of the National Electrical Code, Articles 380, 430, and 600.

General use AC switches are suitable for use at full rated current and voltage on loads of
fluorescent and incandescent lighting and for other inductive or resistance loads. Our switches
are rated for motor loads and are suitable for 80% of their rated current.

General use AC-DC switches are suitable for use at full rated current and voltage on resistance
loads and at 50% of rated current on inductive (fluorescent) loads. However, they are not suitable
for incandescent lighting or motor loads unless specifically marked for such applications.

Special use AC switches may be used at full rating on resistance or inductive loads, including
fluorescent. For incandescent (tungsten) lighting loads, they must carry an “L” rating. For motor
loads they require an “HP” (horsepower) rating.
INDUSTRIAL
COMMERCIAL Special use AC-DC switches are suitable for use at full rating on resistance loads only.
RESIDENTIAL They must be derated for inductive loads, including fluorescent. For incandescent lighting
applications, they require a “T” (tungsten) rating and for motor loads they must have an
“HP” (horsepower) rating.

To ensure safety and reliability, Cooper Wiring Devices switches are tested, rated, and marked
