PART 2-Questions 8-15

Fifty-nine-year-old Canadian Lucy Brown is one of the pioneers of virtual volunteering. Despite suffering
from a rare muscular condition that restricts her movement, Lucy has contributed to various environmental and
educational causes from her home in Ottawa. At age 45, she lost most of her ability to walk or write. However,
thanks to specially designed assistive technologies, she has continued her activism without leaving her house.
One of her favorite tools is a device called EyeNav, which allows her to navigate websites, write emails, and
attend online conferences using only her eye movements. The system tracks the motion of her pupils and translates
them into commands on the screen. With this tool, Lucy has helped teach children English in remote areas of Asia,
communicated with wildlife researchers in South America, and even participated in a virtual clean-up campaign.
[A] Another innovation Lucy uses is the VoiceBoard – a software that “converts” her speech into text in real
time. This is particularly useful during webinars and group discussions, where speed and clarity matter. [B] She can
also use pre-set voice commands to control her smart home devices, attend meetings, and publish social media
updates. [C] According to her, this level of autonomy is something she never imagined possible twenty years ago.
[D]
Lucy’s latest goal is to raise awareness about digital inclusion. She’s currently collaborating with a global tech
foundation to promote equal access to online tools for people with disabilities. In her words, “Technology won’t
solve every problem, but it can break down walls that many of us face every day.” Her work is proof that physical
limitations do not define one’s ability to make a difference in the world.
