1. Depression
· I am going to talk about depression.
· It’s normal to feel sad during hard times, but depression is more serious and lasts
for at least two weeks with other symptoms. Major depressive disorder, also called
clinical depression, is the most severe form and can become dangerous if not
treated. Fortunately, there are effective treatments that can help people feel better.
2. Mental health – Definition
· To start with: I need to definit firsly mental healt:
· „Mental health is a state of mind characterized by emotional well-being, good
behavioural adjustment, relative freedom from anxiety and disabling symptoms,
and a capacity to establish constructive relationships and cope with the
ordinary demands and stresses of life.”

3. Depression - definition:
· Second definition is about depression:
· “Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and
loss of interest. Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it
affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and
physical problems.”
4. What are the types of depression?
· The DSM-5 (a guide used by mental health professionals) lists several types of
depressive disorders:
· Major depressive disorder is a serious form of depression. It includes feeling
very sad or worthless for at least two weeks, often with sleep problems, no
interest in activities, or appetite changes.
· Persistent depressive disorder (PDD) is a long-term, mild or moderate
depression that lasts for at least two years. It used to be called dysthymia.
· Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) happens in children and
causes strong irritability and anger. Symptoms usually start before age 10.
· Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) includes emotional symptoms
like anxiety, sadness, or irritability before a woman’s period, which improve
after it starts.
· Depression due to a medical condition can happen when health problems like
thyroid issues or cancer affect the body. Treating the illness often helps the
depression go away.
5. Who does depression affect?
· Depression can affect anyone — including children and adults.
· Having certain risk factors makes it more likely that you may develop depression.
For example, the following conditions are associated with higher rates of
depression:
· Neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s
disease.
· Stroke.
· Multiple sclerosis.
· Seizure disorders.
· Cancer.
