The document discusses the effectiveness of longer prison sentences as a solution to rising crime rates. While it may provide some benefits, such as allowing prisoners time for reflection, it ultimately fails to reduce recidivism and can harm their mental health and social relationships. The author argues that alternative solutions should be sought instead of simply increasing prison time.

Nowaday, the number of crimes in increasing year by year, so many

think the best way to reduce it is to give longer time in prison for
criminals. In my opinion, I do not totally agree with this viewpoint.

On the one hand, this solution brings us some benefits. It will allow
prisoners having more time to think about the crimes they have cause,
and they will have to find ways to improve themselves. Besides,
criminals who have in the prison for a long time do not have any
contacts to society, which makes them feel lonely and suffer more
mental punishments. Therefore, increasing the amount of time in prison
can to reduce the number of crimes, but it is not the best way.

On the other hand, this way can not make the crime rate lower. After a
long time in prison, they will lose many relationships with relatives and
friends. Furthermore, most people will have a bad impression of
prisoners, causing them to become socially isolated and under a lot of
pressure. This will also make them to commit more and more crimes
again. A survey in 2019 has pointed out that about 15% of prisoners
have gone in prison 2 times, and 6% of them do it more than 2 times.
For these reason, I think giving longer prison sentences is an useless
solution, and we should try to find a better way.

In conclusion, increasing prison time will have big effect on the mental
health of prisoners, but will not reduce crimes.
