Toe Founh Energizing Breath follows up on the focus of the Thi
rd, in that
it continues to push the energy throughout the Iarge and small mer
the body. However, it also has a particular focus on the chakras idians of
of the upper
body, especially the front and back heart chakras.
To Begin: Use the sarne position as for the Third Energiz.ing
Breath.
Jnteat for tbe Fourth EneraWna Breatb: Lightly put you
r awareness on
the areas that you are going to clean and energize: the upper part
of lhe torso,
and especially the front and back heart chakras.
The Fourth Energizlng Breatb: Exhale gently through
the mouth until
your Iungs are empty. As you inhale through the nose, swing
your arms
smoothly in an are out to your sides and overhead. Keep you
r elbows and
wrists lightly locked as you raise your arms. Your palms
remain down
throughout. Coordinate your movement with your breathing so
that when
your Iungs are full, your arms are directly overhead, and the bac
ks of your
hands are touching. After your lungs are full, as you did with
the Third
Energizing Breath, take one final vigorous inhalation through
the nose, and
then lock in lhe breath by tensing ali the muscles of your body,
especially the
PC muscles. Hold your breath and this tensed posture for five seco

release your breath in three short, sharp exhalations through den
ched teeth
as you bring your arms down along the sarne are you used to
raise them:
arms at 2:00 and 10:00 (first exhalation); arms at 3:00 and
9:00 (second
exhalation); arms at 4:00 and 8:00 (third exhalation). As your han
ds retum to
your thighs, release any remaining breath; then relax your bod
y and take 2
normal breaths. Repeat. See figure 6.4 for the entire sequence
of movements

The Fifth Energizing Breath is a very smooth movement that focuses on
the chakras of the upper body, particularly the throat chakra, the front and
back heart chakras, and the front and back spleen chakras. Physically, it
loosens up the muscles of the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Many
practitioners report feeling a melting sensation during this breath. This is the
chakras being charged.
To Begin: Use the sarne position as for the Third Energizing Breath.
Intent for the Fifth Energizing Breath: Lightly put your awareness on
the areas that you are going to clean and energize: the upper half of the body
and the upper chakras, from the solar plexos up to the crown.
Tbe Flfth Energizing Breath: Exhale through the mouth until your lungs
are empty. As you inhale through the nose, make two vertical fists (thumbs
on top), and raise your arms to shoulder height directly in front of you. Keep
your wrists and elbows lightly locked. After your lungs are full, take one
final vigorous inhalation through the nose, and then lock in the breath by
tensing ali the muscles of your body, including the PC muscles. While
holding your breath and keeping your body tense, swing your arms out to the
side parallel to the ground until your body forms a T. Then, swing your arms
back to shoulder height in front of you. Perform this butterfly motion two
more times (three times total). Then bring your hands down to your sides,
relax your fists, and exhale. Relax and take 2 normal breaths. Repeat. See
figure 6.5 for the entire sequence of movements for the Fifth Energizing
Breath.
