THE PRINCIPLES OF
INTERACTIVE
   LANGUAGE
   TEACHING
INTRODUCTION
Wilga Rivers, a renowned language
educator, developed ten principles for
interactive language teaching that
emphasize the importance of student
engagement and communication in the
learning process. These principles
provide a framework for teachers to
create effective and engaging language
learning environments.
OBJECTIVES
Students will gain self-confidence and a positive outlook on language
learning by actively participating and learning from their mistakes.
Evaluate language teaching methods using Rivers' principles,
demonstrating their grasp of both teacher-centered and student-
centered approaches.
Demonstrate fluency and accuracy in language use through various
communicative strategies in real interactive activities.
  TEN PRINCIPLES OF
    INTERACTIVE
LANGUAGE TEACHING
1. THE STUDENT IS THE
 LANGUAGE LEARNER
Teachers should recognize that each student has
unique learning styles, motivations, and goals.
 Effective teaching involves understanding and
   responding to these individual differences.
 2. LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TEACHING ARE
SHAPED BY STUDENT NEEDS AND OBJECTIVES IN
       PARTICULAR CIRCUMSTANCES
It emphasizes the importance of tailoring teaching
approaches to the specific needs and objectives of
the students in a particular context. Teachers
should consider factors such as age, language
proficiency level, cultural background, and learning
         goals when designing their lessons.
3. LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TEACHING ARE BASED ON
NORMAL USES OF LANGUAGE, WITH COMMUNICATION OF
MEANINGS (IN ORAL OR WRITTEN FORM) BASIC TO ALL
           STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES
This principle stresses the importance of using
language in authentic and meaningful ways. Teachers
should create opportunities for students to
communicate their ideas and engage in real-world
language use, both orally and in writing.
    4. CLASSROOM RELATIONS REFLECT MUTUAL LIKING AND
RESPECT, ALLOWING FOR BOTH TEACHER PERSONALITY AND
STUDENT PERSONALITY IN A NON-THREATENING ATMOSPHERE
                 OF COOPERATIVE LEARNING
Emphasizes the importance of creating a positive
 and supportive learning environment. Teachers
should foster mutual respect and trust between
themselves and their students, encouraging open
        communication and collaboration
5. BASIC TO USE OF LANGUAGE ARE LANGUAGE
    KNOWLEDGE AND LANGUAGE CONTROL
Recognizes the importance of both language knowledge
(vocabulary, grammar, etc.) and language control (the ability
to use language effectively in different situations). Teachers
should provide students with opportunities to develop both
               aspects of language proficiency
6. DEVELOPMENT OF LANGUAGE CONTROL PROCEEDS THROUGH
CREATIVITY, WHICH IS NURTURED BY INTERACTIVE,
                PARTICIPATORY ACTIVITIES
It highlights the role of creativity in language
        learning. Teachers should encourage students
to experiment with language, take risks, and
            express themselves creatively through
                      interactive activities
 7. EVERY POSSIBLE MEDIUM AND
MODALITY IS USED TO AID LEARNING
Emphasizes the importance of using a variety of
teaching methods and materials to cater to different
learning styles and preferences. Teachers should
incorporate visual aids, audio recordings, technology,
and other resources to enhance the learning
                      experience.
8. TESTING IS AN AID TO LEARNING
This principle views testing as a tool for both
assessment and learning. Teachers should use
tests to identify students' strengths and
weaknesses and to provide feedback that helps
        them improve their language skills
  9. LANGUAGE LEARNING IS PENETRATING ANOTHER
CULTURE; STUDENTS LEARN TO OPERATE HARMONIOUSLY
WITHIN IT OR IN CONTACT WITH IT
It highlights the importance of cultural awareness in
language learning. Teachers should help students
understand the cultural context of the language they
are learning and develop intercultural communication
                         skills.
  10. THE REAL WORLD EXTENDS BEYOND THE CLASSROOM WALLS;
LANGUAGE LEARNING TAKES PLACE IN AND OUT OF THE CLASSROOM
This principle emphasizes the importance of connecting
language learning to real-world experiences. Teachers
should encourage students to use the language they are
learning outside the classroom, through activities such
as reading, watching movies, listening to music, or
                 interacting with native speakers
