2024, with imports valued at USD 56.29 billion, marking
an 11.5% increase from the previous year. This
significant trade development underscores China’s
substantial presence in India’s import market. India’s
import landscape is diversified, with Russia and the
UAE also featuring among key import sources.
Conversely, the US remains India’s top export

Indo-Turkiye Friendship Association has been

• Praveen Vashista has been appointed as the Special
Secretary (Internal Security) in the Ministry of Home
Affairs, succeeding Sivagami Sundari Nanda, who will
retire on December 31, 2024. Vashista, a 1991-batch
IPS officer from the Bihar cadre, will serve in this key
role until July 31, 2026. Prior to this appointment, he
held the position of Additional Secretary in the Home
Affairs Ministry and served as Officer on Special Duty.

compulsory subject
• Uttarakhand Madrasa Board has recently planned to
make Sanskrit a compulsory subject in 416 madrasas
across the state. The board is preparing to sign a
memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state’s
Sanskrit department. Let us tell you that at present,
Arabic is taught in more than 100 madrasas.

Deputy Chief Minister (DCM) of Jammu and Kashmir
• National Conference (NC) vice-president Omar
Abdullah was sworn in as the new chief minister of
Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday (October 16, 2024)
during a swearing-in ceremony in Srinagar. On this
occasion, Surinder Kumar Choudhary, a prominent
face from the Jammu region, was appointed as Deputy
Chief Minister (DCM). The function was organised
under the chairmanship of Jammu and Kashmir
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
India in the 23rd SCO meeting
• India will be represented by External Affairs Minister S.
Jaishankar at the 23rd SCO Heads of Government
Meeting to be held in Islamabad on 16 October 2024.
Jaishankar did it. This meeting was chaired by
Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, in which
leaders of China, Russia, Iran and Central Asian
countries also participated. The SCO was established
in 2001 to enhance regional cooperation and stability.

• The Maharashtra Cabinet decided to change the name
on October 14, 2024.

• The Kerala Assembly passed a resolution urging the
central government to withdraw the 2024 Waqf
Amendment Bill, citing concerns over violations of
federal principles and democratic values. The bill has
been criticized for replacing elected Waqf board
members with nominated officials, thereby
undermining state rights. This resolution was
supported unanimously by the assembly, led by Chief
Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, with Governor Arif

Dr. Jitendra Singh unveiled India’s first airport-based
self-operated indoor air quality monitoring facility

indigenous indoor solar cell developed by CSIR-NIIST.
Space organization has launched the Europa Clipper
Mission to explore Jupiter’s moon
• NASA launched the Europa Clipper spacecraft to
explore Jupiter’s moon, Europa, and its potential to
sustain life. The spacecraft will travel 3 billion
kilometers in a nearly 10-year mission. Europa is
believed to have a deep ocean, possibly 120 km
beneath its icy surface. In 2013, Hubble detected
geysers on Europa, suggesting thermal vents that
could support life. The mission aims to study these
vents for signs of life. Europa Clipper is NASA’s

• The Indian Defence Ministry has recently signed a $3.5
billion deal with the USA for 31 MQ-9B drones (16 Sky
Guardian and 15 Sea Guardian) to enhance defence
capabilities. The deal includes 15 drones for the Indian
Navy and eight each for the Army and Air Force.

• The 5th National Water Awards 2023 were announced in
New Delhi. Odisha won the first prize for Best State,
followed by Uttar Pradesh in second place. Gujarat

efforts in water conservation and management. A total
of 38 winners were honored in various categories,
promoting awareness of sustainable water practices.

State has become the third state to conduct a caste-
based census
• The Telangana government has started a
comprehensive household caste survey to ensure fair
resource distribution among all communities. This
makes Telangana the third state to conduct a caste-
based headcount, following Andhra Pradesh and
Bihar. The survey aims to plan and implement various
opportunities for the socio-economic and educational
improvement of OBCs, SCs, STs, and other weaker
sections. It focuses on enhancing employment and
India’s ranking in the 2024 Global Hunger Index
• India ranks 105th out of 127 countries in the 2024
Global Hunger Index, falling under the “serious”
hunger category with a GHI score of 27.3. This ranking
indicates that 13.7% of India’s population is
undernourished, with alarming rates of child
malnutrition, including 35.5% stunted, 18.7% wasted,
and 2.9% child mortality.

approved Partha Pratim Sengupta as the Managing

founding MD and CEO Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, who
resigned on July 9, 2024.
