Introduction

The relationship between church and development is multifaceted. Some argue that religious
organizations contribute positively to community development through social services, while
others emphasize the importance of secular approaches for broader inclusivity. It's a complex
interplay between faith-based initiatives and diverse development strategies. Church
development often involves a combination of spiritual and practical strategies. These may include
fostering community engagement through outreach programs, providing educational
opportunities, supporting healthcare initiatives, and promoting social justice. Additionally,
churches may focus on leadership development, creating a strong sense of community, and
leveraging technology for communication and outreach. The specific strategies can vary based on
the church's mission, values, and the needs of its congregation and surrounding community.
What are Social Transformation Activities?
Social transformation activities encompass a wide range of initiatives aimed at bringing about
positive and meaningful changes in society. These activities can include educational programs,
community development projects, advocacy for social justice, initiatives promoting equality and
inclusivity, environmental sustainability efforts, and campaigns addressing issues like poverty,
healthcare, and human rights. Essentially, any effort that seeks to enhance the well-being and
progress of society can be considered a social transformation activity.

Ongoing Issues with Social Transformation Activities in Churches
Ongoing issues with social transformation activities in churches can include:

1. Resource Limitations: Churches may face challenges in terms of funding and resources, limiting
the scale and impact of their initiatives.

2. Inclusivity Concerns: Some activities may inadvertently exclude certain groups, leading to
questions about inclusivity and equal access.

3. Dependency Risks: Long-term dependency on charitable aid without sustainable development

strategies can be a concern.

4. Cultural Sensitivity: Cultural differences may lead to misunderstandings or resistance to certain

social transformation efforts.

5. Political Sensitivities: Engaging in social issues can sometimes be seen as politically charged,
potentially causing tensions within congregations or with external entities.

6. Effectiveness Measurement: Evaluating the effectiveness of social transformation activities and

ensuring they meet the intended goals can be challenging.

7. Balancing Spiritual and Social Focus: Striking a balance between addressing immediate social
needs and maintaining a spiritual focus can be complex.

8. Ethical Considerations: Churches may grapple with ethical dilemmas, especially in diverse and
rapidly changing societal contexts.

Addressing these challenges often requires thoughtful planning, collaboration with stakeholders,
and a commitment to ongoing reflection and adaptation.
Social Transformation in Chapel of Resurrection
The Chapel of Resurrection is located within the University of Lagos in Nigeria. It was built in 1964
and serves as a place of worship for the university community. The chapel's architecture
combines modern and traditional elements, creating a unique and serene atmosphere. It's a
popular spot for weddings, baptisms, and other religious ceremonies.
At the Chapel of Resurrection, they primarily follow the doctrines of the Christian faith. The
chapel is affiliated with the Anglican Communion, so you can expect to find Anglican traditions
and practices being observed there. These may include regular worship services, sacraments such
as Holy Communion, and teachings based on the Bible. It's a place where people can gather to
express their faith and find spiritual guidance.
The Church, including the Chapel of Resurrection, plays a significant role in social transformation.
Churches often engage in various community outreach programs to address social issues and
promote positive change. They may provide assistance to the less fortunate, support education
initiatives, promote healthcare services, and advocate for social justice. By doing so, the church
contributes to the well-being and development of the community.
In relation to all of these, Professor Familusi in his paper, The Church and Development: A Study
of Social Transformation Activities of the Chapel of The Resurrection, University of Ibadan —
highlighted specific important activities that are engaged in the Chapel of the Resurrection. These
are;
1. Resurrection Youth Education Centre which caters for secondary school students for their
participation in major secondary school level examinations in the country. The students are
taken through intensive training and development.
2. Host Family Project which guides moral and spiritual guidance to students and many other
individuals as many as are interested.
3. Support for Indigent Students which is premised on a special funding for students who are
indigents. It’s been reported that a large amount of students have benefitted from this
activity.
4. Widow/Widower/Orphan Welfare Scheme which caters for the mentioned group of
individuals. The programme was formed in 1995 and ever since has developed into a great
arm of the church. There are certain requirements before individuals can be considered or
eligible for admittance into the programme.
5. Support for the needy which provides for people in a considerably penurious situation and
that are in need of financial support.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the church has generally been of great aid to several group of people particularly in
the social arena and this has allowed for the growth of the church in itself. The dynamics
between church and development are intricate and multifaceted. While churches contribute
positively to community development through various initiatives such as education, healthcare,
and social justice, the relationship is not without challenges. Issues like resource limitations,
inclusivity concerns, and the need for a balanced focus on spiritual and social aspects highlight
the complexity of this interplay. Successful church-led development requires thoughtful planning,
adaptability, and a commitment to addressing the evolving needs of society while staying true to
core values.
