Training
teaching, or developing in oneself or others, any skills and knowledge or fitness that
relate to specific useful competencies.
Internal or External Training -
Internal (in-house) training: takes place at work – appropriate if training needs are specific
to the organisation but can vary in quality
External training: provided by an outside agency. This generally costs more but can be of
higher quality and more motivating as a result. It has the advantage that the trainee can
meet people from other organisations and exchange ideas with them
Methods of Training
On the job training: provided in the workplace by the employer. Tends to be low cost
Off the job training: takes place outside the business by an external training provider
such as a college or university. Provides courses which a business would be unable to
provide internally, but can be expensive
1. Mentoring - An experienced employee is asked to provide advice to help a less
experienced worker
2. Induction training - Designed to help new employees settle quickly into the business
and their jobs. It involves learning about the way the business works rather than about the
particular job that the individual will do
3. Job rotation - The worker spends a period of time in doing one job, then another period
of time doing another job and so on
4. Graduate training schemes - Aims to give young people training to equip them for a
specific job. Businesses receive a subsidy from the government for each person on the
scheme
5. Apprenticeships - Designed to offer those with University degrees professional or
managerial training. Used by medium to large businesses
