Cattle and Animal Husbandry

Animal husbandry is the science of farming livestock, crucial for providing food and materials in response to rising population demands. Cattle farming focuses on two main types: dairy animals for milk production and draught animals for labor, with effective management practices essential for quality and efficiency. Key management practices include maintaining hygiene, ensuring adequate nutrition, and implementing disease management strategies.

Overview:

Since ages,Animals have long been essential to our food chain, providing products
like milk, eggs, and meat. Beyond food, they also provide materials such as silk,
wool, and labor. However, the rise in population in the 21st century has led to a
huge demand in food and other products .To meet these demands ,there have been
huge efforts to increase the scale of animal husbandry .Therefore this sector has
grown larger to ensure resources for everyone.

Animal Husbandry:

Animal husbandry is the science of farming livestock, involving the breeding and
management of animals. From a business perspective, it is basically a large-scale
operation where large numbers of livestock are raised, fed, and sheltered to provide
food. The earliest form of animal husbandry began with cattle, such as cows and
buffaloes. Since then, it has expanded to include poultry farming, fisheries, and
apiculture (beekeeping).

Cattle Farming:

Cattle farming can be divided into two main types based on human needs: one for
food production and the other for labor in agriculture.

In the first category, animals that provide milk are known as milch or dairy
animals. The second category consists of draught animals, which are primarily
used for labor.

To enhance milk production in milch animals, it’s important to understand the

lactation period, which is the time after a calf is born when a cow produces milk.
Increasing this lactation period can boost milk output, but maintaining quality is
crucial. Therefore,Effective management of dairy farming is necessary which
involves developing high-yielding, disease-resistant breeds. For example, foreign
breeds like Jersey, Holstein-Friesian, and Brown Swiss are known for their long
lactation periods, while local breeds such as Red Sindhi, Sahiwal, and Gir are
recognized for their disease resistance.

Cattle and Farm Management:
Cattle farming is not all about milk or meat production. It also comes with some
responsibilities. To ensure efficiency and quality, there should be proper
management of livestock in terms of shelter, food and disease management .There
are some general steps taken, especially these ones.

1.Proper Hygiene in their shelter by:

● Cleaning their sheds regularly
● Properly cleaning their bodies so that they are not infected by bugs and
infections
● Proper drainage system to clear animal waste

2.Requirements of food:
1.Adequate water supply
2. nutrient-rich fodder ,for providing healthy fodder ,two things are considered -
roughage(high fiber) and concentrates(proteins )

3.Lastly,there is disease management which is to keep animals healthy through

regular vaccinations to protect against common diseases, such as anthrax
