                                  ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to the effect of social media on children’s education
in primary school in Makurdi local government area. Specifically, the study
examine the types of social media frequently use by students. The study also
find out if the use of social media by students in an institution affect their
reading culture. Furthermore, the study investigate the extent at which students
visit the library to read books. Lastly, the study evaluate the extent at which
student in an institution makes use of social media. A total of 30 responses
were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the
findings revealed that the types of social media frequently used by students are
Facebook, twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Also, the use of social media by
students in an institution affect their reading culture. Furthermore, students
visit the library to read books to a high extent. Lastly, student in an institution
makes use of social media. The study thereby recommend that students should
be encouraged to join English and literary society in order to develop their
interest in reading of books. Also, the school management should organized a
reading competition at the end of every academic session and award the best
readers in order to encourage students’ reading habits. Further more, there
should be a need of integration of extensive reading in the minimum standard
of school in Nigeria, benue state as an independent general study course for
students in order to improve their reading habits.
