INVESTIGATORY PROJECT
ALDOL CONDENSATION
Class 12
Acknowledgment
I sincerely express my gratitude to my chemistry teacher, [Teacher's Name], for their valuable
guidance and support throughout this project. I also thank my school for providing the necessary
resources for conducting this investigation.
Certificate
This is to certify that [Your Name], a student of Class 12, [Your School Name], has successfully
completed the investigatory project on Aldol Condensation under the guidance of [Teacher's Name]
for the academic session [Year].
Objective
To study the Aldol Condensation reaction and understand its mechanism using acetaldehyde and
dilute sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as reactants.
Introduction
Aldol Condensation is an important organic reaction in which two aldehyde or ketone molecules
react in the presence of a base or acid to form a beta-hydroxy aldehyde or beta-hydroxy ketone.
Upon heating, this intermediate undergoes dehydration to form an alpha, beta-unsaturated carbonyl
compound.
Theory
1. Aldol Condensation occurs with aldehydes or ketones containing at least one alpha-hydrogen.
2. In the presence of a dilute base (e.g., NaOH), the alpha-hydrogen is abstracted, generating an
enolate ion.
3. This enolate ion attacks another carbonyl molecule, forming a beta-hydroxy aldehyde or ketone
(aldol).
4. Under heating, dehydration occurs, leading to the formation of an alpha, beta-unsaturated
carbonyl compound.
Materials Required
- Acetaldehyde (CH3CHO)
- Dilute Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)
- Distilled Water
- Test Tubes
- Beaker (100 mL)
- Dropper
- Stirring Rod
Procedure
- Take 10 mL of acetaldehyde in a test tube.
- Add 2-3 mL of dilute NaOH solution using a dropper.
- Stir the mixture well and allow it to stand for 10-15 minutes.
- Observe the formation of a white precipitate.
- Heat the mixture gently for 5-10 minutes.
- Note the color and odor change.
Observations
- Initially, a colorless solution is observed.
- A white precipitate forms, indicating aldol formation.
- Upon heating, the solution turns yellowish-brown with a pungent odor.
Precautions
- Handle acetaldehyde carefully as it is volatile and flammable.
- Use dilute NaOH with caution to avoid burns.
- Heat the reaction mixture gently.
- Conduct the experiment in a well-ventilated area.
Conclusion
The experiment successfully demonstrated the Aldol Condensation reaction using acetaldehyde and
sodium hydroxide, leading to the formation of crotonaldehyde.
