‫ٍۢرْهَش ِفْلَأ ْنِّم ٌرْيَخ ِرْدَقْلٱ ُةَلْيَل‬

The Night of Glory is better than

a thousand months.

Preparation for the Last 10 Nights 􀏋

Meaning of Lailatul Qadr

‫ ِرْدَقْلٱ‬ ‫ ُةَلْيَل‬
Destiny/Decree Night

Some scholars defined ‘Qadr’ in the context of this holy night as

‘destiny/decree’ (qadar). To them, this meant that this was the
night in which the destiny of each person was decided. It would be
this night in which a person’s sustenance, lifespan, and other
critical matters would be sealed for the coming year.

In support of this, ‘Abdullah ibn Abbas RA said: “It is written in Umm

al-Kitab (the Heavenly copy of the Qur’an) during Laylatul-
Qadr what shall come to pass in the following year of good and
evil, sustenance, and lifespan. Even the pilgrimage of the pilgrim
(shall be decided); it will be said ‘so-and-so will perform
pilgrimage’ (on this night).”

Al-Hasan Al-Basri (d. 110 H), Mujahid (d. 104 H) and Qatadah
(d. 117 H)—three renowned early Muslim scholars shared this view
and were reported to have said that “all the affairs of lifespan,
deeds, creation, and provision are decreed on Laylatul-Qadr in
the month of Ramadan and will come to pass in the coming year.”

Introduction 􀏋

Imam Al-Nawawi concluded his discussion on Laylatul-Qadr by

saying: “It was named Laylatul-Qadr, meaning: the night of

judgment and discernment (in the affairs of men). This meaning is

what is true and popular.”

Other scholars defined the meaning of ‘Qadr’ as ‘power,’

indicating the greatness of the honor and might of the night.

Similar to this view is the interpretation of ‘Qadr’ as ‘power’ in that

the righteous deeds performed during this night are far more

powerful than they would be on any other night.

Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said: “A person would attain the reward of the

night, even if he has no knowledge of it. This is because the

Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said ‘whoever stands (in prayer) during Laylatul-Qadr,

with faith and hope, will be forgiven,’ and the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬did not

make knowledge of the night a condition of their forgiveness.

And had knowledge of the night become a necessary factor, the

Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬would have made this clear.”

Night of a lifetime 􀏋
Ibn Rajab said:
Ibn Al-Qayyim said:

"O you who has wasted the "If Lailatul Qadr was one

that will amend those lost and stand forthe night prayerthe

equivalent to that of a lifetime."

ten nights?"

[Lata’if Al-Ma’arif (p.368)] [Badaa'il Fawaa'id (1/55)]

Al-Qadi Ibn Al-Arabi said:

"In comparison to the Ummah of Prophet Muhammad ‫ ﷺ‬the

nations before us were given a much longerlife span to do
good. Therefore, Allah gifted this Ummah with many
actionsthat are mighty in reward. From the greatest of these
giftsis Lailatul Qadr."
When is lailatul Qadr 􀏋

Out of all the nights, the likelihood of it being the 27th

seems the highest, however it is not 100% guaranteed.

[Sahih Al-Bukhari (813) & Sahih Muslim 1167]

Lailatul Qadr is most likely to be on an odd-numbered night (i.e.

21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th) out of the last 10 nights.

Sahih Muslim 762

An-Nawawi said: "Some scholars said that it does move, so in one

year it may be the night of the twenty-seventh, in another year it
may be the night of the twenty-third, and in another year it may be
the night of the twenty-first, or some other night. This is more
likely to be correct. In this way we may reconcile between the
different Prophetic narrations."

Bukhari 813 & Muslim 1167

In conclusion, a person should seek Lailatul Qadr in all 10

nights as the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬advised: 'Seek it [Lailatul Qadr] in the
last ten nights.'

Sahih Al-Bukhari 2020

Mighty reward

‫ٍۢرْهَش ِفْلَأ ْنِّم ٌرْيَخ ِرْدَقْلٱ ُةَلْيَل‬

The Night of Glory is better than a thousand months.

A number of the classical scholars stated that a righteous action

(regardless of whether it is the prayer, contacting a relative, charity,
reciting Quran or remembrance of Allah) that is done during the
night of Al-Qadr is better than an action done in over 1000 months
(more than 83 years and 4 months). This means if a person spends
this one night engaging in worship, they will receive the reward for
more than 1000 months of worship.

[Tafseer Ibn Katheer (8/443)]

Forgiveness

‘Aishah informed us: “When the last ten nights of Ramadan came, the
Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬would refrain from marital relations, stay up at night and
wake his family up.”

Sahih Al-Bukhari 2024 & Sahih Muslim 1174

The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬used to strive hard during the last ten nights of
Ramadan in a manner in which he did not do during other times.

Sahih Muslim 1175

The Moon

Abu Hurairah said: “We were talking about Lailatul Qadr in the
presence of the Messenger of Allah PBUH and he said: Which one
of you remembers (the night) when the moon arose, and it was
like half of a plate?”

Sahih Muslim 1170 & Al-Mufhim by Al-Qurtubi (2/391)

Calm and Peaceful Night Some of the scholars believe that the
night of Al-Qadr is a calm and peaceful night. It is not hot nor is it
cold. However, this is based upon a narration that is disputed.
Preparation for the last 10 nights 􀏋
Start off with a clean slate and seek forgiveness for all of your sins.

Conditions for tawbah (to seek forgiveness for major sins):

1 - Be sincere - ensure that you are repenting purely for Allah’s sake

2 - Stop doing the sin

3 - Regret committing the sin

4 - Have a strong determination to not return to the sin

5 - Repent before you see the Angel of Death

6 - Restore the rights of the creation (if it applies If)

You have taken or borrowed something that belongs to someone
else then you must return it back to them
You need to seek forgiveness from anyone you have wronged,
physically or verbally, e.g. swearing, backbiting, slandering etc.
[ Sharh Muslim by An-Nawawi (9/20-21), Al-Madaarij (1/192) & Tafseer Ibn Kathir (2/236)]

Make a robust plan to ensure that every minute is accounted for

Make a list of duas to read in the night

Complete any outstanding tasks to avoid any major distractions
Set automated donations, so you do not miss giving charity

Encourage others to make the most of the last 10 nights

Do all of your shopping in advance
Think of all obstacles that may arise to overcome them in advance
Preparation for the night Prayer 􀏋

The reward for the whole night in Prayer!

The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Whoever prays ‘Isha’ in congregation, it is
as if he spent half the night in prayer, and whoever prays 'Fajr' in
congregation, it is as if he spent the whole night in prayer.”

Sahih Muslim 656

The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: "A person will get the reward of a whole
night in prayer if they prayed the night prayer behind the Imam
until the salah was fully completed.”

At-Tirmidhi 806

How do you pray Taraweeh?

Pray 4 units of Isha (fard) Pray 2 units of Isha (sunnah)
Pray Taraweeh Pray 3 units of Witr
If a person did not pray Taraweeh and prayed the 4 fard units,
and 2 sunnah units for Isha and then prayed 3 units for witr, it
would still count as night prayer
However, a person should try to pray more than this in order
to gain the magnificent reward
Recite as much Quran as you can in the prayer. You can recite
any portion you wish from it
There is no strong or agreed-upon words of remembrance/
du'a to recite in between the Taraweeh prayer.
Preparation for the night Prayer 􀏋

The recommended surah to be recited in each unit of Witr are:

1st unit: Surah Al ‘Alaa
2nd unit: Surah Al-Kafiroon
3rd unit: Surah Al-Ikhlaas
[Musnad of Ahmad (24/72) & authenticated by Ibn Al-Mulaqin Al-Badrul Muneer (4/339)]

Adhkar after the witr salah

“The Pure and Holy King (Allah) is far
above imperfection and deficiency”
Subhaanal malikil Quddoos
Note: recite 3 times (raising your voice for the last)
