Section 1 Comprehension I 13%
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions in complete sentences.
The Winter Olympic Games is an international sporting event which occurs every four years. It includes
sports which are practiced on snow or ice, otherwise known as winter sports. These include the biathlon,
curling and many others.
The inaugural Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix, France, in 1924. The original sports were alpine
skiing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, ice hockey, Nordic combined, ski jumping and speed skating.
From 1924 until 1936 the Winter Olympics were held every four years, but then they were interrupted by
World War II. They were resumed, however, in 1948 in St. Moritz, Switzerland, which was elected to host
the first post-war Games. Switzerland’s neutrality had protected the town during World War II and most of
the venues were still in place from the 1928 Games.
The Winter Games have changed since their initiation. Many sports like freestyle skiing and short track speed
skating have been added. The inclusion of new sports has broadened the appeal of the Winter Olympics
beyond Europe and North America. Even though European countries like Norway and Germany dominate
the traditional Winter Olympics sports, countries like South Korea, Australia and Canada are finding success
in the new sports. This can be seen in the national medal tables.
Additionally, the rise of the television enhanced the profile of the Games and created an income stream via
the sale of broadcasting rights and advertising, which has allowed outside interests like television companies
and sponsors to exercise influence. This has resulted in criticism, internal scandals, and even political boycotts
of the Winter Olympics. Some nations have used the Games to showcase the claimed superiority of their
political systems. Nevertheless, the Games have global television an audience of millions.
The Winter Olympic Games have been hosted on three continents, but they have never been hosted in a
country in the southern hemisphere. 2014 Winter Olympics were held in Sochi, Russia, marking the first time
that Russia has hosted the Winter Olympics Games.
