In blues, typically major and dominant chords are interchangeable. So, should you ever see a chord chart
with A or A7 then any of the above chords could be used.

Altered Dominant Chords

A7#5
Altered dominant chords have a very specific purpose and should only be used sparing, usually just before
the chord progression moves to a chord a 4th away. In this case A7#5 should be used just before a chord
progression would move to a D chord. The obvious place to do this would be when playing in the key of D,
then the A chord in bar 12 could be substituted with an A altered domain: A7#5.
Barre Chords – Root 5th String

In blues, typically major and dominant chords are interchangeable. So, should you ever see a chord chart
with E or E7 then any of the above chords could be used.

Altered Dominant Chords

E Aug E7#9 E dim


In this case, the above E altered dominant chords should be used just before a chord progression would
move to a A chord. The obvious place to do this would be when playing in the key of A, then the final E
chord in bar 12 could be substituted with an E altered dominant.

The Diminished Chord can be found in the song Need Your Love So Bad

Dominant 7th Chords – Root 4th String

As stated earlier, in blues, the above chords are interchangeable.


Open E7 Chords

E7 E7 E7
The above chords are all E7 chords which make use of open strings and are interchangeable and an
interesting way of creating original chord based riffs and are particularly well suited to acoustic guitar.

Open A7 Chords

A7 A7 A7 A7 A7

A7 A7 A7
The above chords are the ‘A’ equivalent of the open E chords described earlier.

Open D7 Chords

D7 D7 D7
The above chords are the ‘D’ equivalent of the open E chords described earlier.
Minor Chords
Barre Chords – Root 6th String

Am Am7 Am7 Am7

Barre Chords – Root 5th String

Dm Dm7 Dm7 Dm7 Dm9
