DONNING

In order to minimize the risk of transmission of infection, donning of PPE must be performed
in particular sequence

STEPS OF DONNING:

Preparation:

 Donning to be performed only in the designated area


 The HCW must be prepared for shift duty by taking a meal, using washroom &
drinking water prior to entering the donning area
 Remove all the accessories, jewelry & change into hospital scrubs
 Change into clean hospital scrubs & closed washable footwear
 Perform hand hygiene with soap and water.

Step 1 : Hand Hygiene (follow all he steps of Hand rub/hand wash)

Step 2 : Inspect the gown for any defect or damage

Wear the first pair of gloves

Wear your Gown/coverall (you can use clean chair)

 Start by wearing from below upwards (first leg sleeves, then arm sleeves, then ensure
to cover your neck)
 Zip up your coverall or tie your gown from back

Step 3: Wear your shoe cover:

Sit on a clean chair & wear shoe cover & pull them above your calves over your gown

Step 4: Wear N-95 mask & wear Hood

 Hold your N-95 mask like cup in your hand (with both straps hanging in front)
 Place the mask on your face, pull & wear lower strap first by placing below ears &
then wear upper straps by wearing above the ear
 Fit check your mask by compressing to ensure seal across face & exhaling & inhaling
to ensure there is minimal leakage
 Wear the hood covering the forehead and cheeks

Step 5 : Wear Face shield/ eye goggles

 Wear the face shield over the hood and ensure the fit (tighten and loosen it according
to need)

Step 6 : Wear the gloves

 Wear the second pair of gloves


 Pull them to cover the sleeve cuff & forearm as much as possible
FINAL CHECK :

 Once fully donned, perform a final inspection of your PPE.


 Make sure your gown is fully covering your clothing & there are no gaps where your
skin is exposed

DURING USE :

 Avoid touching your face or adjusting PPE once its on


 If any part of PPE becomes compromised, replace it immediately following proper
protocols
DOFFING

Doffing is extremely important as even a minor breach in the doffing procedure would
subject HCW to a huge risk of acquiring the infection. Hence Doffing must be performed in a
particular sequence

PREPARATION:

 Doffing to be performed only in designated area


 Check for any leak or soiling in PPE before doffing (disinfect the area)
 Doffing room shove have 2 chairs – dirty & clean
 Hand hygiene must be performed appropriately when required (After each step)

Step 1: Engage observer/call the designated person & check your PPE:

 During entire doffing procedure, observer must not touch your PPE
 Inspect your PPE for any gross contamination which could be disinfected with alcohol
based wipes

Step 2: Disinfect your gloves

 with alcohol based hand rub, that is dispensed by automated system or by help of a
staff or by pressing nozzle with your elbow
 Remove your gloves:
o Using a gloved hand, grasp the palm area of the other gloved hand & peel the
first glove
o Hold the removed glove in gloved hand and slide the fingers of ungloved hand
under the other glove at wrist & peel the second glove over the first glove
o First glove will remain inside the pouch of second glove
o Perform hand hygiene after removal, after discarding the gloves in red bin

Step 3: Remove & discard shoe covers

 Sit on dirty chair


 Remove the shoe cover by slowly pulling the outer surface starting from the top &
then pull from toe end.
 Try not to cross over the legs while sitting & discard them in red bin.

Step 4: Remove the face shield/ eye goggle

 Loosen your face shield


 Remove by holding the back handle
 Discard in red bin
 Disinfect your hands

Step 5 : Remove hood and coverall

 Slide back your head by holding it from top


 Unzip your coverall or untie your gown (taking care that sleeves do not touch your
skin)
 Holding suit at the arms, shrug it off the shoulder slightly, then pull the suit from side
of the waist & roll your arms out. By touching inner surface of the suit, carefully roll
out each leg
 Fold the gown by touching from inner surface & discard in appropriate bins.

Step 6 : Perform Hand Hygiene , remove & discard N-95 masks

 Perform hand hygiene appropriately to avoid contamination


 Do not touch the exposed surface of the mask
 Stoop forward & first remove the lower strap, then carefully remove the mask by
pulling the upper strap
 Discard appropriately

Step 7 : Disinfect your shoes

 Disinfect your shoes using alcohol wipes by sitting in clean chair

Step 8 : Remove Second pair of gloves

Step 9 : Perform appropriate hand hygiene

 Follow all steps appropriately

FINAL CHECKING & ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS:

 After removing all PPE, perform thorough hand wash which is crucial to ensure any
potential contamination is eliminated
 Doffing procedure should be slow & methodical
 After leaving doffing area, showering is advised in highly communicable diseases
